Jaco Tribute Bass Build

I can't make Kaufman do sh&t. He works at his own pace. I went up to his shop, last Friday. My green Sterling was done with setup. He had to level the frets, and it cost me some $, but it plays better than ever. For $130, I got frets leveled, action setup, and he even cleaned and oiled the neck. For some reason, this EB Sterling has a birdseye neck, but my other one doesn't (shrugging).
Chris, who I guess is like the office manager told me that he's been harassing Kevin to get started on it, but to no avail. I have no choice. I will wait. I guess you can't rush a masterpiece. Well, that's what I keep telling myself.

That would be hilarious. He's been so occupied with sound engineering the new, local blues bar, so all his other projects have gone by the way side. I wish he'd teach his epoxy trick to his coworker, Holly. Oh well.

So, I went to Kaufman's yesterday to pick up an EMG preamp for my Ibanez refurb project. His price for the item was insane, so I couldn't pass it up. I also put down the first deposit for my Jaco. I figure if Kevin sees funds coming in prior to starting, he won't have to worry about fronting the money for the supplies needed to do the neck conversion. Kevin wasn't there, because he just had eye surgery. I guess I'm glad he waited until his vision was better. I talked to his main luthier, Holly. I made a joke about how I hope I get my Jaco before Christmas. She laughed and seemed pretty confident that I will get it soon. Hopefully, before he goes out on tour in June. :(

Because I'm extremely nosey, I asked about the artists Holly has worked with. This chick has done like 5 bass setups for Adam Clayton. We just scratched the surface, but she has a lot of great insight on instrument repair. I know she's also setup guitars for The Edge and Kirk Hammet. I could seriously pick her brain for hours. It's just refreshing to meet someone in this line of work who has a personality and is able to hold a converstaion.

Anyways, she couldn't find my preamp that Chris promised me. It sucks, but I will drive up there again, tonight.

Heck I figured you would have already put something down on it, since it is expensive, and he is The Kevin (so you know he knows what he is doing), and because musicians tend to be broke asses and not pay people..;)
Hopefully, he will now find the motivation to get'er done!

Now, what did you learn about Adam Clayton's setup??Anything interesting?

Also, I'd like to suggest you doing a proper Lee Sklar tribute...that would be awesome, IMO.

Well, seeing that I've pumped almost a grand into that place in the last 6 months, I assumed they'd figure that I was good for the money. Hopefully the money gives the needed motivation.

Holly said that Adam had a bass that he would only agree to buy if it played perfectly. It was this 68 Jazz with a custom gold flake finish. Basically, it fell into Holly's hands to make the sale. Adam liked her work so much, that he brought her 4 more basses. She did his 5th bass just before she moved down here.

Well that's cool. Did she say what his idea of perfect was, as in high action/low action, string gauges, or anything specific?

I absolutely love the build man. Fantastic work. Something you should be very proud of. But one thing. Europeans and various nations don't add letters, you guys just take them out :D The language is English after all, not American.

EDIT: Just realised after reading all the way through that that had already been covered. Sorry. Hanging out to see the finished product friend. It's going to blow my mind. I can feel it already
