Jaco Tribute Bass Build

Good to know. I hope to never repeat this build again, but if I do, I may try other things.
Can't wait to take pics of this bass at Jaco's park in Lauderdale.

wow.. just read the entire thing. I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad I caught this tread at the end as there would have been NO WAY I could have handled the wait it took for the neck job. Though I'm sure, let me turn on my hindsight pedal(it sits after the distortion in the chain btw), it was well worth the time. We cant enjoy the new with out first paying a small tribute to the old and honor the true intent of not only BG's build but what it represents in the "bigger picture" of things. And that is, at least to me, that out of any death new life can spawn.
So before we join BG and celebrate the "new life" lets pause for a brief moment and honor the "death" of the inspiration. I posted this video when I came across it quite some time back and it still moves me to this day on a number of levels. As a player I remain in sheer awe at the range and depth of Jaco's abilities. From his blinding speed and accuracy, which many love him for, to the most subtle of tones that to the untrained ear just sound like a note played in proper placement; but to us, who realize what a delicate and exacting touch it takes to achieve, feel blessed to have heard the hands of god work a single note into absolute perfection and are truly moved by it. This is where Jaco lives for me..those single "perfect" notes. Listen between 3:17-3:19 and you will hear my favorite example of this.
I'm sure many have seen this before and I hope they wont mind me posting it again for those who have not. As a Jaco fan I have read all the book's, interviews and statements about the death of the BOD that I could find. And, though I'm no expert, I honestly believe this is the last time it was played before it went to Kevin. One account of it's destruction had Jaco smashing it during an argument. The account I believe to be the actual "true" version was that during a show in 84ish Jaco was supposed to throw the bass over his rig to his road manager waiting off stage, which he did at the end of alot of shows, but instead, and most likely due to the drugs / alcohol, he tossed it straight up in the air end over end and it smashed down to the stage.
This video is from a 1984 tour Jaco went on with Gil Evens(the older guy Jaco shakes hands with at the beginning of the video). Gil has even stated that during this tour Jaco would be late for sound check / shows and they would go searching the streets and found him a number of times literally asleep in the gutter. At the end you can clearly hear it hit the stage. I have truly never seen anything so beautiful and so very sad at the same time. For those that don't know his story or are new to Jaco please realize this video was taken a few years before he was killed and at a very low point in his life. So please do a bit of research and learn about his early work with WC and the CC riders, Joni Mitchell, Weather Report, and his solo work to truly understand how he changed the game for all bass players. Ok I have rambled on enough... With respect I give to you the death of doom.

The new bass sounds just amazing! For years I have also wanted to build a "tribute" to the bod. Sadly, life keeps getting in the way. But, thanks to your drive to actually do it, I have again started a separate savings act for this project. It might take me 2 years to get up enough money but its going to happen! BG please keep posting clips-n-pics for us and congrats on the new bass...And thanks for keepin' Jaco alive brother.

I play(well attempt to play) that all the time. At some point in every rehearsal we have I will go into it, usually its what I warm up to. We were setting up for a show a while back and the live music / stage area of the club we were playing at was separated from the rest of the club by 2 sets of walls that open up when its time for the show. I was there before the rest of the band and after I loaded in I turned everything on for a quick check. I grabbed a barstool, sat facing my rig and started to play this. When I was finished I heard people clapping, turned around to see about 10 people standing behind me that had opened the wall and come in from the other side when I started playing...lol One guy said "thats the best version of America the beautiful I have ever heard...you should totally record that"! I told him it wasn't "my" version but Jaco's. He said "who"?..lol I bought him a beer and gave him more info than I think he ever wanted about Jaco. This is by far my favorite version he has done. There is just something so honest about it...so perfect. I know most of us have found inspiration in many people and in many things. I try to find it every day in some form but this was the first time I was truly moved. Still makes me

that version IS the best EVER!!! i played it on my '62RI jbass for my 80yr old neighbor (war vet) and he was floored. he thought it was my composition and i too had to give him a Jaco history lesson, lol.*
I'm glad to have news of this again.

the "Death of Doom" clip was awesome...I think that would be such a great ending to a Jaco biography movie...pretty much sums up his life in a nutshell. One day someone will make a quality movie about his life and the whole world can see the unique artistry he gave us all.
