Jacos bass - where?

Jaco destroyed the bass of Doom, literally killed it, turned it into kindling. His guitar tech, Kevin Kaufman, spent 150 hours on it, and somehow performed a miracle. Jaco got the bass back, and recorded with it one last time before it was stolen/lost, and then he died, and the whereabouts of the BoD were a mystery for a couple of decades.

It's still Jaco's bass, since he owned and played it in it's current form. I think Kevin Kaufman proved himself to be an artist in bringing it back to life.

Yup, thats pretty much how it looked, except it was still wrapped in plastic when I saw it. Nice to see Mr. Kaufman again, A very nice and talented gentleman, also a fine bass player. He had a couple of vintage jazz basses he let me play when his band and mine did a double bill. Hope he is well and doing what he loves.

I think I have a photo somewhere of kevin playing my old yamaha bass at the wedding reception of a mutual friend.

Is there a way to find out who it was?

look, I really don't remember the guy or the band; we're talking about 2006 or something like that and I am no expert in contemporary Us rock bands. I only clearly remember this 28/30 yr old skinny shy and very polite long haired guy and one of the members of the jazz combo telling to us:

"...you know, our regular bassplayer could not come to Europe because he had a major issue at home; so we have grabbed this rockstar, here: he plays in (XYZ) pop band and (sarcastic) he will even possibly be disappointed to see only 50 people tonight, instead than their usual 700/800 thousand he's accustomed to!"

I can check with my friends, though...


P.S.: another aspect to be considered is that clearly he made for the love of music, surely not for the 6/700 euro he might have collected (more or less his share, I suppose) with a few concerts done in Italy/Europe with a rather obscure jazz group!!! Another point for him!!!!

It's always good to see someone playing for the love of music and out of friendship with the other musicians, rather than because it's a paying gig. I have seen a local guitarist have a great time playing when the club had less than 50 people and then watching a DVD as a touring player in front of 500,000 or more.
