James Tyler Club

Neil Stubenhaus on TYLER 5 w/ Quincy Jones

NOTE: The masterful bass line development and NEIL NEVER plays on 2and 4 of the beat BUT rather leaves that space for the drummer, bringing a wicked subtle groove to this very sensuous soul ballad.
A MASTER session player.

Oh yeah David Hungate also owns/owned a Black TYLER 5 :D

No lead at all.. But like to have the money freed up . just in case.. I dont even know how much used Tyler 5s go for.... My friend had one years ago.. It was lightwight and nice. teh preamp drained tha battery in about a day.. But i think they determined it was defective and they fixed it.. I would really like to get one though...

I would sell my mother to get one...you must have a lead on one if you're willing to sell a Sadowsky for it.

I just had to get in on this. The color is Blue over Sliver sparkle. This bass explodes under a spot light.
Plays like a butter too. Still one of my all time faves.

Beautiful bass, bro! Love it!!!

Thanks. I don't mean to start nuthin but the Cinnamon Tyler looks more like a standard than an Abe. The Abe has a more round body and smaller bottom horn. It also has a less girthy neck. Still great handmade basses. I love mine.

When I've asked Jim about making basses again, he seems not to have the space in the shop. Plus he gets so many orders for guitars that he's usually back ordered. Also, he can't get the same pickups from Bartolini that he used to get.

In case anyone has 5 bills to spare, this is on ebay right now:

The description mentions a Bart pre instead of the much more desirable Demeter, but still...she's' a looker!

You're right. The Abe model is quite unique...I actually prefer the looks of his (and yours) over an Abe...Abe's a strummer. :)

2. B String - Tyler 5-String

Apologies to B String for not realizing it was yours dude :o

I appreciate it! Just fyi, I originally bought the bass after finding out that Gary Lunn had one and was using it on a lot of the Nashville CCM stuff he was playing on. I had met him years ago when he was touring, and have followed his career as he become much in demand as a session bassist./QUOTE]

Same story here. I've been looking for one ever since he played on my friends record a few years back. I got to listen in on the session and he explained to me why that bass sounds the way it does. He does use a couple of things in the studio to help it too. He has a vintage LA-2A limiter and a Wunder Audio PEQ-1 pre.

Coming late to this party. But here's my 2 Tyler 5's. If you all hear of any Tyler's for sale, please let me know! Thanks!

The tobacco burst bass's name is "Lightning"! This 5 was a fretless that I had refretted by the great guitar tech Jim Crawford.

The red bass's name is "Thunder"! I bought it from the awesome bassist Ric Fierabracci. It's an Abe Laboriel model, kinda. (www.ricfierabracci.com) It's pretty much my "go to" axe. Just about every drummer and sound man I've worked with LOVES this bass. It's got the BEST bottom end of any bass I've ever owned!

I know that I'm truly blessed to own TWO Tyler Basses! Especially now that Jim Tyler really doesn't make them anymore. I am truly appreciative that I have these instruments. The are AWESOME sounding basses!

Nice to find out about the limiter and pre Gary uses, thanks. He's been coming out to my area (Ft. Mill, SC) to play on some projects for some friends of mine... and still sounds great.

Another late to the party. My much appreciated and treasured Serial number 'One' of the newly designed Tyler Bass Four String model line that was never to be. Made by James, and a surprise gift from my wife in 1999. My main bass for everything.

Hi, fellow James Tyler Bass fans. James said he was hearing more interest in 4 strings back in 1999 when this bass was ordered, so he re-designed this body and neck to be more fitting for 4 string bass dimensions. This bass sounds great plugged into any sound system; good or bad, thanks to the buffered/low impedance Demeter preamp. A very in-tune, great playing and solidly made instrument. James is one of kind, and his instruments reflect what a quality builder and innovator he is.
