Jamplay online bass lessons

As soon as this nasty gash on my hand heals and I have a little cash I'll give this a go based on the feedback here.

Thanks for reporting on this all, and that JP for interacting with us here!
No problem at all. You can hit me up here anytime if you have any questions or need any help, or get a hold of us at support at jamplay dot com.

Alright, screw the gash lol. Had to take a week off work to keep it dry so I can continue clinicals for school :(

So now that I have a bit of extra time, I started the free trial.

Total n00b here, been playing about 6 months, so I'll let you know how the n00b experience is :D

Kudos to JamPlay for adding the awesome bass content!!

I too can attest to how great this site is and what a great value it is when you consider the amount of content and talented instructors they have.

I'm about halfway through the Larry Cook series (awesome instructor) and he explains things in a very detailed and efficient manner that is easy to follow. I also really appreciate the various camera angles used in the filming to help the student verify their technique and understanding is complete.

One thing I'd like as well perhaps in a video series is a gearhead who really digs deep (pun intended) into the various gear options for a beginning bassist when they seek to purchase equipment. I realize that's kind of vague but I recall some confusion at times with terms used (growl, etc) when it came to specific types and brands of amps, cabs and such.

Anyways awesome site and I definitely recommend them!

Great point Azul. Terms like growl, scoop, clipped, bright mids or highs, solid sounding B strings, muddy, etc all leave my fumbling for a sound to match.

Lots of it I figure out playing with others, but it seems I'm at an advantage for that compared with a lot of people. I have played with others from the first time I strapped on a bass.

How was your experience?

Awesome glad you're enjoying the site!

I had used a trial of Jamplay for bass a while ago and went through half a dozen or so Freebo lessons. I really liked the lessons but there wasn't anything else for content to make me sign up yet.

Have any of the games/tools for bass been added or any of the libraries yet? As soon as those are up I'd like to sign up. Unfortunately there is no way to tell what content is available or what has been updated since my trial without an active account.

Looking at bass.jamplay.com it makes it look like there are scale libraries and games available but I only saw ones for guitar last time.

There's been a lot of great stuff added lately. You can check the teachers page to see all the teachers we have now, as well as all of their lessons.

Unfortunately, we don't have any of the games transferred over to bass yet. The scale library does work for bass though. We're working on transferring the chord library and building up a bass backing tracks section also.

It seems that nursing school, waiting tables, and my three children got in the way :(

As soon as I have some cash I'm going to get back on and try it (all my cash went to a couple new to me basses )

I do love the fact you are on here getting feedback!!
Ah okay no problem. If I can help at all let me know!

Here is a sort of review of the bass side of JamPlay.

I am wondering when there will be more songs added to the site. I signed up for a year long membership since the chatter in this thread has been going on since March. I figured there would be more content in terms of songs at this point but it looks like there are only about a dozen songs in there and of those, I would say two of them are beginner-worthy. Kind of.

I really like the site. The videos are great but from a beginner's perspective, it's very hard to follow along because some instructors go very fast and don't seem to realize that what is second nature to them is very confusing and new to a new bass player.

Some tell you to just follow their fingers on the frets and since they are all accomplished bassists, it's very hard to tell which finger is pressing down at times no matter the quality you use. There are several angles used but very often I can't find a comfortable one to be able to discern which fret is being pressed.

I wish the song section had the option to either slow it down or that they had the bassist play the song on half speed and then at full speed. I also wish there were sections of practice exercises played with no talking over them so you can loop those and practice. Maybe there are some in other lessons.

The accompanying written lesson material is very good to include and can be helpful but oddly, it appears below the video so if you want to watch a video and glance at the printed page simultaneously, you can't. You have to scroll down to see the print and the video is now off screen.

Some of the printed materials are broken into two pages and in some cases, the first page will not contain the entire section you are trying to play along with. I think one of the teachers was going over a walking blues line and it was split between two separate lesson notes. These are all very short pieces so I'm not sure why that was done.

Another beginner difficulty happens when the teacher is explaining something and begins playing what he is talking about at the same time. That is not really conducive to a play along later and would be easier to hear and play along with if there was no talking.

Yesterday, I looped a section of Symphony of Destruction to practice it but if I hit play and scrolled down to the printed TAB to follow along, the song would not loop. It would play once and stop. The only way to make the video resume playing is to scroll up so the video is in view. Then you have to quickly scroll back down if you want to follow the printed music. Rinse and repeat once the loop stops again. Not easy for someone new to the instrument.

I'm pretty pleased with the membership and look forward to the addition of more content aimed at beginners that doesn't include so much lecture. There is a lot of lecture there already. Repetitive exercises that we can loop and play along to build speed and accuracy in moving all over the fingerboard would really add a lot.

Oh. Then to me it seems a little misleading, as the videos and website say you get access to all the lessons all the time.
What's the difference, why partition it off to just bass or just guitar?

Hmm, I was considering trying it, but think I will pass until this is implemented
:(

I believe you get a discount if you subscribe to one service and then add another later but I'm not positive since I don't play guitar (yet, maybe someday).

I am upping my review of this product because they supply Guitar Pro materials with this service. I downloaded a demo of GP yesterday and the ability to pull in the bass tab, slow it down, loop it and practice along is a godsend for me.

I ordered GP for about 34 bucks on Amazon yesterday and look forward to using it with the Jamplay stuff.

Just to clarify, the bass lessons and Link Removed are separate products. When you sign up for bass, you get everything within the bass section of the site. When you sign up with guitar, you get everything within the guitar section of the site.

If you're a bass member and want to access guitar content (or visa versa) go to "My Account" and you get a substantial discount to the other product. In due time (restraints with our billing software), we're hoping to offer one discounted product that will get you access to both bass & guitar lessons.

Hope this helps!

Newbie bass player here and just found this thread. Are there any good discounts currently going on for Jam Play?
Nothing currently right now. However if you're a paying guitar member, you can get significant bass discounts (a year for $99.95). We'll likely be running black Friday / cyber Monday sales also.

Let me ask this question again. When are the Dave LaRue bass lessons going to be available?
I checked with our team and unfortunately, we're a bit behind on content editing. They said it SHOULD be up by January, but not to be surprised if it ends up being February or March.
