Janis certainly would not have been featured on the cover of Rolling Stone in the last 15 years had she emerged then, as she does not meet the magazine's evident standard for hip-bust ratio. Plus all women on that magazine cover are inevitably crop-topped.


Comedian Doug Stanhope has a great routine about the first TV appearance of Susan Boyle. He recounts her coming out on stage for Britain's Got Talent, and the audience tittered loudly at her appearance. Stanhope goes on to say that while the clip is always celebrated for some imagined transformative moment, it is really merely a document of what bigoted swine the audience are to assume Susan cannot sing because she is not beautiful. In fact, they titter because they assume she will totally blow! How could someone that ugly sing?

Myra Friedman wrote that book "Buried Alive" i've been paraphrasing, and I don't remember a whole lot in that book about Janis's lesbianism.
Does Friedman contend they were lovers? She describes her interest as maternal in the biography.

But yeah, Janis was hideously damaged by public school. As Bukowski said, "The American school yard wins again."

I never liked Janis' stuff. Ever. I decided to give her another chance by listening to the posted videos. Same. No thank you. Way too much "gunk & grunge" around the music for me. I couldn't finish any of them. Yuck.

Yet I loved Pink's version of Bobbie McGee. Hmmm.

Oh no, now someone mentioned Bob Dylan. I'd sit through an hour of Janis before 3 minutes of Dylan. Sorry, too much for me to take. I'm off to listen to some pop or country or swing or funk to clear my brain.

This was a good article, and the contention is that Myra Friedman's biography is incomplete because she failed to perceive that the long term close friendship Janis enjoyed with a fellow IV user was in fact a lesbian one.

I definitely think Janis had a beautiful voice.

Nobody sang like her when she appeared on the scene. She conveyed pure pain.

Lol. A LOT of today's megastars aren't very photogenic. Today's fashion engineers can and do put lipstick on pigs. Janis would be in Maxim's hot 100 for sure with their treatment.

"Stop trolling. This thread is a heartfelt tribute to Janis Joplin!" and then..."She had a nice body" and "I'd have been a very enthusiastic lover".

Creep level turned up to a solid 7 only a few pages in. Nice.

On topic, JJ was certainly one of the greats. She died 12 years before I was born, so I obviously couldn't have seen her live, but I've watched much of the live material available on youtube. Very chilling how much musical passion was involved in many of those performances.
