Janis would have a hard time making it today as she was not very photogenic. Sad commentary on todays music.
Janis certainly would not have been featured on the cover of Rolling Stone in the last 15 years had she emerged then, as she does not meet the magazine's evident standard for hip-bust ratio. Plus all women on that magazine cover are inevitably crop-topped.
Comedian Doug Stanhope has a great routine about the first TV appearance of Susan Boyle. He recounts her coming out on stage for Britain's Got Talent, and the audience tittered loudly at her appearance. Stanhope goes on to say that while the clip is always celebrated for some imagined transformative moment, it is really merely a document of what bigoted swine the audience are to assume Susan cannot sing because she is not beautiful. In fact, they titter because they assume she will totally blow! How could someone that ugly sing?
