All kidding aside, I think I would seriously consider this configuration for bass speakers. It makes sense. Brings it right up to your ears.

All kidding aside, I think I would seriously consider this configuration for bass speakers. It makes sense. Brings it right up to your ears.
Peavey boxes. Grs 10pf8 speakers ($10ish each at PE). Line-X bed liner. Steel grills coated in Plasti-dip. Corners are original, covered in appliance epoxy. There's a pretty big spike around 120 (like 8dB), and they roll off pretty hard below 70. Tons of top end. As long as I use eq to tame the spike it's all good. I really don't need to put a ton of power into them with the speaker being so high. Either of those amps is plenty (8 ohms too) for anything I've done with them. Their primary design goal is to be ok for anything (bass, guitar, voc, keys, pre recorded) and be nearly indestructable. Accomplished that. They don't sound great with anything, but they sound good enough with everything.
Thanks! Sounds like a cool and useful project, and they look way on the clean side of jank to me. I'll have to go back through the thread again; now that you've described them I recall reading about them before, but didn't put it together...?

My bassment stack of janky doom. Speakers are Hartke xl410 on the bottom, GK enclosure with Hartke 10s on top. When playing out, I power both with the Hartke lh500. When it's a small venue or at home volume, it's just the top cab with the super janky, Hobbby Lobby box with an amp savaged out of a Eden EC210 combo (top view below).

It actually works quite well because I have a power strip installed inside the box and I can stuff the SansAmp Bass Driver and cables inside the box. A mouse hole is cut in the back of the box for cable runs. Close the lid and way we go.

I think that's both a Janky Rig of Doom as well as a qualified rig of doom!
My Janky Ultra+ Rig of the Bass Apocalypse (I guess it's not exactly an ultra low budget rig, but compared to what some other people have spend on their rigs I guess it still qualifies. Together both amps including cabinet cost me just slightly above 800$ used and my bass including new quality pickups and new cheap budget bridge cost me almost exactly 400$ from new, and I am probably not the only one here on TB who owned basses that cost 1200$+ alone from new. No matter what at least it still looks pretty janky, even if it sounds like a million to me and I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder):

Nice! My first few band practices as a bass player involved a 4-channel Peav mixer head with one dead channel, driving the lo input of a SP5ti PA cab with a dead horn...and a Scorpion 15. I was amazed to find I actually liked the tone I was getting after about a minute of EQ twiddling. I've come to believe that Scorpion 15s sound pretty good for bass with lower-powered amps when you push them a little bit...at least if you like slightly dirty, grunty rock bass tones as I do.Thought this would be a great thread to make my first post! Part of me wants to suggest finding a scrap of something weird looking to make a filler panel for that missing TNT chassis...diamond plate? Nah, too Mesa. Oiled walnut? Nah, too Jaguar. Wire up a short fluorescent tube in there with the ballast and guts from a gooseneck fluorescent desk lamp? Heeeeyyyyyyyy.
This is Def the most Janky of rigs I have ever owned lol. It was a few years back when I blew my main rig and was scrambling for money and gear. I was more than happy to see it go lol. Behringer head and two low end Peavey cabs lol.
Extra points for mixing speaker sizes, and for putting the 15 on the bottom of the stack. Just be careful, it's been proven that mixing speaker sizes can cause a rip in the spacetime continuum.
Is that a port on the bottom speaker cabinet or a hole where a now missing driver went? I think a double bonus is in order if it is for a missing driver....
I like it, a blacklight would be ideal. If the opening was a little taller, a filler panel with a batman insignia cutout, and blacklight behind that - perfection!
As an owner of nearly the same cab (amp moving to headcase) and an incessant fiddler with (popular free speaker modeling software I can't recall the name of right now since it's been a while since I got back to that project) I have sections of birch-face ply cut to flll the front and back openings, and will be closing the front port and cutting a new hole into the upper space to give the cabinet more volume (cubic feet/liters wise) and a new port opening on the slot. It models as looking better than the original configuration, at least by whatever criteria I used for that decision. Speakon in one of the plywood panels....
