Ha! I just gotta cuppla "likes" on the above photo.

I actually a cuppla weeks ago gave the above cab to a long-time friend who played bass in a cuppla bands I was in in the 90's - he's using it for to leave at his practice space, says it sounds great. It's absolutely stock except for the electrical tape edits ...

I now have a GK 2x12" Neo cab for my louder needs, a cuppla 1x12" and a 1x 10" for recording.

My current band practice rig has reached higher heights of jank this summer: I discovered that the Joyo British Sound pedal I like to use for bass DI recording at home has enough output to drive my Crown power amp when it's on the 0.775V input sensitivity setting, and it makes an appealingly dirty, sleazy sound.

$40 pedal, $80 power amp, $60 project bass...and it's loud enough, and I'm diggin it!

I love the ingenuity, cab on top of the head solves a lot of issues and also adds an extra "antiauthoritarian" jank factor.

That bass killer too. Doesn't matter how much of little a rig costs if it gives you what you want.

I wish I had pictures but in college (many, many eons ago) I had an Electro-Harmonix two channel amp that looked like a mailbox driving a Cerwin-Vega 18 cab with gray carpet and a Mitchell 410. Used a crappy Peavey preamp and attempted a jank bi-amp setup that didn't sound terrible. It did get loud and got me through many frat parties and bar mitzvahs. It was the jankiest of rigs...ugly, heavy but loud. That's when I could hold a 12 pound Stingray on my shoulder for four hours.

All purchased used (circa 1981) with hard earned dollars from Leo's in Oakland. Memories...

It was the jankiest of rigs...ugly, heavy but loud. That's when I could hold a 12 pound Stingray on my shoulder for four hours.

The CV moved some serious air for sure. And for an 18 it was pretty articulate, even without the tweeter. The front grill cover frame broke on mine very early so it was open like the picture. I shoved that thing into the back of my '73 Capri more times than I can remember. Everything else sat in the front seat next to me. If I brought the 410 it would go in the front. One time I forgot a pillow to protect my windshield and the corner of that cab cracked it on a stop. Damn Mitchell cab. Most of the time I just used the 18. It was great for dance music and of course there was no FoH support.

My updated janky rig. I use the head on the regular, as it sounds great. It is a Vox Pathfinder acting as a preamp into a Vox MV50CL as a power amp with some colour. The cab is a converted Vox combo which robbed parts from an old Peavey Max combo. It sounds okay, but not as good as when I use my Traynor cabs. Nonetheless it look great!

I had something similar (probably detailed several pages ago) and loved it. DOD Meat Box as a "preamp," Acoustic 300 PA(?) head for a power amp (one knob that went to 20!), new (in the '90s) Ampeg 4x10, and a c. 1980 Peavey 118D with the logo and all the tolex on the bottom gone. I later replaced the Meat Box with a decidedly non-janky Demeter tube preamp but continued to use the rest of it until it got burgled the Demeter and that 1x18 were the best.
