Janky-A Rigs of Doom

Interesting... My church's Flextone Plus 112 combo that we have had for 22 years plus is still going strong, sounds great, and has been used 3x a week or more since we got it. Never updated it, just used it. One of our guitarists inquired about upgrading it and I asked him why because it works and sounds great and has been solid as a rock. I expect it to continue to be so until it isn't, then we'll replace it. ;)

Having suffered through many live sets during the late 90s/2000s epidemic of bands that used brand-new digital modeling technology to surgically remove every trace of midrange from their live tone as if it were cancer, I can verify that your description is completely accurate.

I wish I could contribute more to this thread, but the only true jank I currently own is my $120 Glarry bass.

Sure, I would think regular use would be better, aside from increased wear on rotary encoder pots or momentary switches if lots of tweaking were going on. My guy's Flextone was sidelined for at least several years after he got a Spider Valve head (he calls it a "Bogner" because it has a Bogner-designed tube power section), and then a Marshall head. So maybe it's a switch or pot contact corrosion issue...?

Yeah, the old radical mids biopsy is a bummer! I think I prefer erring the other way: mids like rusty steel wool being jammed into your ears.

There's some hidden jank, let me break it down!

WD into the Aguilar GS 112 full range with tweeter off into a Peavey 1820 crossover @ 250 hz. into the Eden CX 110 with tweeter full on. Then the disgusting rat fur and just me playing is janky enough :D

Jank at it's finest :)

Small Xacto incision in the dust cap and it rolled right out. Black nail polish to seal it up.

Painted the metal grilles and added some Home Depot wheels and made it my new main rig.

Had a similar situation, picked up my 90s genz Benz 112 for 40 bucks from a friend cause it had a rattle and he knows I'm broke these days. Took it home, tightened down all the screws, no more rattle! Life's good sometimes!

Teetering on jank...
A Peavey MK-III head I got for $80 and had re-hab'd, atop a fur-less, also re-hab'd Goliath-II cab. There's only a minor *outward deviation* by the Peavey head beyond the edges of the SWR 4X10, but jank-like contribution made by the compromised cosmetics of the MK-III bring the characteristic "look" of real-deal Jank.
Sounds entirely monstrous, I really like this rig. It's the genuine thing from my roots, which I have recently re-embraced. And in true Jank fashion, it was all gotten on-the-cheap.
Oh yeah, and the here-incomplete janky pedal board photo-bombing, with home-built power supply partly viewable.
I hope I pass the audition...
