I was pretty easy. I asked Jason what SS roundwounds had Yellow silk.

He gave me the short list, and I got the MTD Stainless Steel rounds.

Stupid silly way to pick strings, but I love them.

I bet you could ask Jason what strings smell the best, and he will tell you. Probably the same day!

- quick question Jason -

On the front of the pack it says: "Stainless Steel Roundwound Bass Strings"

On the back of the pack it says: "My custom wound steel and nickel strings..."

What are these things made of ???

I'm not Jason, but I've heard of more than a few "Stainless Steel" sets actually being Nickel Strings with either a wrap or two of SS, Nickel string with a thin Stainless Steel plating, or Stainless Steel wraps around a Nickel core. It could also be a generic printing for MTD's string sets that are hand-marked "Stainless Steel" or "Nickel" but have the "either/or" sentence on the back. I actually think this last is the most likely - I just check a few extra sets of Spector steels I have, and the packaging is totally generic except for a small sticker on the front that indicates whether they're Stainless Steels or Nickels, and what gauge (Light, Medium, Heavy) they are.

Wait... Which Berklee Today mention? I must have missed it who is on the cover? I went through the last ones I have...


MTD uses the same writeup on both his stainless and nickel plated Steel strings... "both of these products stainless steel or nickelplated steel"

Usually nickel plated Steel have stainless under wraps but some are all nickelplated wraps. Stainless are usually all stainless but can have bronze under windings.

Jason, it was Volume 24 Number 3, Spring 2013 with "Berklee's Korean Legacy" on the cover. In the "Alumni Notes" under 2002 it has "Jason ********* of Woodland Hills, CA, established Bass Strings Online, an online bass string shop. Visit www.bassstringsonline.com"

Granted, it's not a cover story or listed in the "Features", but I least I remembered somewhere in the back of my head that you & BSO had been mentioned in BT recently! :D

After calling to ask some questions I was told Jason was out sick :(

I asked some questions to the guy on the phone, and he was unsure, so he had Jason call me.

We talked things out and he took the order right over the phone. Then when I got home and measured my strings I was worried, but he wasn't available, so I asked them to cancel it until we worked it out. Jason caught wind of this and called and emailed me right away and we got things straightened out.

I wish more companies did business this way! Jason seems to take it personal that his customers are satisfied. MANY companies out their seem not to care if their customers are satisfied!

Thanks again Jason! Keep up the good work!

Jason is simply amazing. Even when ill he takes care of his customers.

And, I would like to add that he is also a very caring and generous man.

There is a new place to send your old strings that you would normally throw away. They sort and ship these used strings to countries where people have little access to money, and if they have money, strings are hard to find.

Jason stepped up and donated many packs of BRAND NEW strings - a couple dozen or so packs - and a few brand new straps.

And my own personal experience with Jason:

We have a contest going on in the iOS club - and it is always fun to have prizes. So I decided to fund a pack of strings from BSO and have them sent to the winner. When I contacted Jason to ask him how it would work with me paying but shipping somewhere else, I was stunned at his answer. He is going to co-sponsor the prize and turn it into a $40 Gift Certificate for the winner.

Wow. I was already of the mindset that I need not waste my time on other string sites, but this has just proven to me what kind of man Jason really is.

I'm on the bandwagon as well. Killer prices and shipping time. Very well packed.

I did have an issue with one string popping before even getting to tension, but this thread has my hopes set high for an easy fix!

I have been out of the office all week sick, but have been in communication with the crew. I did not see any emails about a broken string... Did you make contact with us somehow?

I have an order for some D'Addario Half-rounds somewhere in USPS between there and here. BSO was a bit higher than a famous Oregon-based high-volume retailer that actually ships from Kansas, so I expect it'll take a little longer to arrive as well.

But this is fine - that other place gets enough of my money anyway. Nowhere does BSO promise that they will absolutely have the lowest prices on everything, every time. This is as it should be, because places that try to play that game are leaving themselves to be run into the ground by bigger competitors with deeper pockets.

It's this thread (and the others like it) that sent me to BSO, and will keep me going back. Because I know that they support the community. If I ever were to have a problem, I know they'll be there to straighten it out.

I don't buy enough strings that a buck or two here and there will make any difference to my budget. I like supporting the businesses that support us back. (And they do have better prices on a lot of stuff...)

If I don't like the half-rounds or the chromes I already bought, I expect I'll be back at BSO for a set of TI's like the very old ones that came with the new-to-me bass.

Jason at BassStringsOnline - Wow, as another satisfied customer, I have to add my 2 cents. Most everyone here knows they have a great selection and best shipped prices, but, Jason also provides information on the winding lengths of various strings, going beyond general descriptions like "long scale" short scale" etc. He also took the time to reply to a thread I started, even though he knew he could not sell me the strings I was asking about because he had no access to them. This guy cares.

Quick followup.
First I wanted to correct my misinformation about price matching. Jason already did, and was quite classy about it, but I wanted to emphasize it since it was my screwup.

Next - per Jason's request, we had a small discussion offline. I am quite happy with the outcome.
