yea...well lets hear your studio work man??? i think it sounds pretty damn good myself. that was his tone at the time and his style all around. growly, punchy and fast. i see no problem with anything newsted ever did
I dislike his playing on it's own, but with Metallica it's appropriate. Nobody should listen to Metallica for bass, it's a guitar band for sure.
sounds pretty right on to me. The OP mistakes Sloppiness for attack and distortion.
The attack is even and the runs are executed with articulation.
Now I'm no Metallica fan, but this track was obviously done as it was intended.

I am not one to come at anyone, but it would seem to me that Jason has made a butt load of cash as a "sloppy" bass player. Also find the Entwistle isolated vids on you tube, one could certainly call that "sloppy" too. All these men ae fantastic bassists in their own right.
Do I have anything negative to say about either bassist, or Cliff, or any bassist for that matter? Nope! I say good on them!
And I always go into any of these threads, or any commentary on any bassists skill with this in mind, where is your recording contract?
Can I even play that? Let alone better than the original bassist? And even if I could play better, does that make tem bad or me worthy of condemning them?
Life is not always a competition, we are all bass lovers and bass players...well I am a bass lover anyway...

Nine out of 10 of the so called "isolated bass tracks" on youtube are just some tools recording themselves so take what you hear with a gigantic grain of salt.
i like his playing a lot and his sound is meaaaan! lots of fret buzz i guess...

..... Sorry, but you try to listen to James or Kirk's guitar soloed, and you'd find that sloppy aswell!
His bass FITS the mix okay? Listen to the bass enhanced version of blackened, and you will understand. An instrument can sound really good alone but like crap in the mix, and it also works the other way around. In this case: Crap solo'ed and really FKN ace in the mix.
I feel like making a thread: Victor Wooten - SLOPPY! and show that guitar and bass duel where he makes his bass sound like it's taking a gigantic ****...
I'm a fan of clean, precise playing in more of a pop/jazz/funk setting. But man, to my ear, he is just laying it down... aggressive grind, plenty of dynamics... pure attitude.
It's not my thing, but I hear NOTHING wrong with that track given the tune it goes along with.
I felt like punching a small kid after I heard that, which IMO is an appropriate response for the vibe he/they are trying to achieve.

So, Metalbass777, how's that new @$$hole working out for you? Did everyone tearing it hurt? JK. I see your point, but he does mix in well. I'd go maybe for some more distortion and overdrive, but to each his own. 
Come on guys. He (Metalbass777) was just making an observation. We've all done it; something isn't to our taste and we show it around. That's what makes Talkbass... well, Talkbass. He maybe shouldn't have phrased like that, but still, it's an opinion, and we've all got one...
