I wouldnt call that bass playing sloppy at all, love the growl. By the way he was playing along side one of the most over rated and sloppiest drummers in rock, so cut him a little slack 
Jason was way better on stage than cliff btw, and i would go as far to say that Jason had a better tone too. Just my opinion.

Jason actually used a headless Steinberger bass through a Gallien Krueger amp, for the recording of AJFA
That certainly does not sound like a GK amp, what's your source?
im not entirely sure about he gk but i have heard many times the stein and i do remember reading that it was nothing near his live set up. just a complete opposite of what he used live, so it very well could be a gk...and he was using a red esp at that time as well but i dont think he recorded with it specifically til garage days
I don't see what's sloppy about it, put a click over the top and I bet he's nailing the tempo perfectly.
As for the tone, well it is metal and that's the kind of tone metal bassists go for 9/10. You don't hear many metal bands with a smooth R&B bass tone (well I haven't).

Newsted went plugged directly into the board, according to interviews he did after the album release. No amp. Not sure what kind of bass it was.
My opinion - anyone who's been around a studio long enough to know s*** about anything knows that a good bass track on a high energy tune will sound like garbage soloed. You need all that grease on the sound to make it cut through.

He talks about his recording setup for Justice in an old interview I have somewhere. He played the Steinberger live occassionally during the justice tours too. Along with a short ESP endorsment thing, and landed on Alembics (and WALs) almost exclusively for the rest of the Justice/Black album tours.
i mixed jasons track back into the song at the level i thought it sounded best at. here it is.

now, i usually love his playing, not as much as cliff, but anyway.
i picked up on two things:
1. he's using so many downstrokes that sometimes he cramps up. you can hear it in the first verse if you listen hard. i'd let him off with that as its a tough riff.
2. just before the solo he's off with the guitar riff, i mean really sit up and take notice off, its a glaring wrong note to my ears.
i'd suspect that even at the recording stage for AJFA the decision had already been made to turn him down, otherwise they really didnt care what slipped through bass wise.

And where are your "tight" uber sounding original tracks?
Just like the same Cliff threat like this one I think its funny how people bash very succesful bassist that will record more albums and make more money that probably 99.999% of everyone here on TB. Im not a Newsted fan, nothing against him either- Im rather nuetral, however he is no means a crappy bassist.
Unless you are a multi platinum selling artist, I think its lame to bag and put down other multi platinum selling artist.:scowl:
My guess is that the original poster is a Cliff Burton fan who doesn't like Newsted, and posted this thread just as a blacklash for the 'Cliff Burton - Sloppy' thread. Just a guess

No, I think he actually used ESPs, look in the liner notes.
I've also seen pictures of him with a ESP fiver from the AJFA tour.
I don't know if I believe that is him or not but I'd blame any sloppyness on having to play with Lars.
personally , i don't think it's sloppy, but that's just happened to be the bass track for that song? i love Newsted's tone. it fits well in the mix, and it's rock tone.
