If got an active Jazz, the AJ-55 is what I would buy. It costs the same as a SB500, but it has 35" scale (I like the thundering 35" B string,) as well as 19 mm spacing. I don't know if the bridge pickup is the Sixties or Seventies position though.

The good news is there are so many great options available these days and at a wide range of price points.
First off, i recommend buying used. The talkbass classifieds are loaded with great options.
I agree that the Carvin SB5000 and Skyline Laklands are great values.
Japan produces a large number of nice j style basses (Bacchus, Atelier Z, and don't rule out a Yamaha BBNE2 - there is currently a used one on Ebay for around $1600 which is a steal).
At $2K+ , you have Sadowsky Metros and NYC, Performance, Lakland USA, Xotic, Lull, Pensa, Alleva Coppolo, Nordstrand, MBass, RBass, Pavel, Low End, etc
They all have plenty to recommend each model. The Alleva Coppolos are extremely authentic as far as their ability to cop the vintage fender thing, but the other options add their own touch as well. Each make has it's own signature qualities but each somehow manages to maintain some semblance of an active j property.
I've heard nothing but good things about Sandberg basses but I've never had the pleasure to try one.
Good luck and for modern applications an active J5 is hard to beat for all styles of music.

Yeah the Xotic's are killer, sorry I tend to be budget minded but if you've got the money for one of those I say do it. Would always pick Xotic over Sadowsky personally..
Nordstrand, Alleva, Valenti, Lull, Sadowsky.........thats a good list to start IMHO.....good luck

You can always put together a warmoth custom if you're a little handy or know a good setup/repair guy

Are we talking clones or just basses with the jazz pickup configuration? Laklands are good. Ken smith design is ok.
I don't think there are any non Fender active 5 string Jazz basses on the market (at least not any ever discussed on this forum).
