Jazz Bass Makeover opinions please!

Bass returned (one day earlier than expected, too - a luthier no only keeping but actually beating his own deadlines? That's new around here...). The fret job is outstanding. I'm in love with this Fender again. The neck is surprisingly thin (thinner than the Squier VM Jazz), super fast due to the low frets + 12" radius (I converted it to 12" from the usual 9.5" when I made it a fretless). Kickass!

Say-hey, anybody want to buy a Squier VM Jazz with little use in Chile? :-D

I'm having second thoughts on it... it's ugly, but now it plays incredible. You get your Fender JBass sound, but with top notch fretwork and the flatter, more modern feeling fretboard.

And I have to save up for a cab... just got a deal I couldn't pass on a Genz Benz shuttle 6.0, and now I'm broke and cabless... but with a kickass JBass and a kickass micro head

Hadn't considered black pearloid... Great look! Though I have a rosewood board, not maple.

Geddammit so much things to buy (SGD preamp for my passive OLP MM2, a lightweight 400W 8Ohm cab, pickugard+control plate+knobs for the JBass, possibly pots too), so little cash...

I didn't vote in the poll but,I have a suggestion..Is there any routes under the p\g??..how about going guard-less with just a chrome control plate and maybe get some tiny black screws to fill the holes...otherwise I would go with blk,tort,or any pearloid color pg(emerald green would look great and be different)..It's a black bass,pretty much any color will look good on that..go to Pickguardian..they have lots of colors,do great work and can make a custom one piece from a tracing of yours or send yours in to be copied..

Mmmm, digging that bluish one... (love blue... my "dream custom bass" is usually a blue-stained ash body with a maple board. Quilt maple for water effect optional )

The great thing about Fenders is that you can customize relatively inexpensively. I have a Geddy and a Roadworn Jazz. The stock pickguards are fine...I like to switch things up. So, I bought 3 pickguards, 1 black and 1 white pearloid and 1 clear acrylic. I rotate the pickguards and basses from show to show.

Hi!

I have this ugly-ass Fender Jazz Bass:

(Notice the guitar-like full pickguard and white strat knobs. )

It's going to the shop for a refret (don't have the time or inclination to keep playing fretless) and, if it's a good refret and I fall in love again with this bass after it comes back, it's a keeper. But if I keep it, I need to do something about that ugly-ass pickguard.

So, please lets hear your ideas about it. I've listed the two ideas I have as a poll, but please post any alternative I haven't considered. It will probably be just a pickguard and metal control plate change, can't afford to refinish it or something like that.

Oh, and there's a question, too: Regular pickguards don't fit the exact screw holes - it wouldn't affect tone to have some extra holes, right? They would be something like two or three unused screwholes under the pickguard, and a couple new ones drilled and screwed.

I really don't mind how it looks now...I'd leave it as is.

That PG is called abalone, if you're interested - it looks better in person than in the pics, too... Here's both my Jazz basses - I'll sometimes switch the PGs back and forth between them, as either works well with either bass:

About that Jazz Bass makeover, this is my 50th anniversary Fender Standard American Jazz Bass, string through body. It has EMG MMTW/SJ pickups, a HIPSHOT double stop D-Tuner, Telecaster barrel knobs
and a mirror pick guard. It looks great and plays great, there's a makeover idea for you.
