My only fretless. Was writing a song that I needed it for. Great bang for the buck.

My P gets the lion's share of the work in my cover band. The Stingray gets most of the work in my original band. Variety is the spice of life!

I record with all of them depending on the sound I'm looking for.

I got Ps, Js and Stingray. I feel could be without the Stingray and survive, not so with Ps and Js; so that's my answer.

It's hard to say, but a P and J covers a lot of tonal ground. The SR is a very versatile bass, but not as much as the Fenders, IMHO. The SR is not quite as ubiquitous as a P or J, mainly because the P goes back 66 years, the J 57 years and the SR about 40. Guess it all depends on what you are going for on the tonal front.

Yep! I can almost guarantee that if you get the J you'll always be wondering about the SR. Of course if you go SR you will never quite shake the feeling that a J is what you really needed. The TB version of win-win.
Personally, I'd go J first but I'm biased toward the J bass's iconic sound and feel.

option.

Not sure how one could want growl and to "stand out" -- and not want a RIC.
