I thought everyone got over the whole "made in ___" thing years ago... Guess I was wrong.

There is no getting over it, only ignoring it.

And before anyone tries to play the inane "race card" here, it has nothing to do with Chinese people. It's the brutal Chinese communist government that is beating our corruption-riddled government(s) at their own game. We've been sold down the river.

I say everyone stop typing on their MIC computer or portable device if everything was made here in the U.S we wouldn't be able to afford anything it takes the average Chinese worker 8 years and 10 months to make the USA annual minimum wage we can't compete with that period and couple that with the crazy fact that the Chinese save 30% of their income where we in the U.S save 6%? our retail markets would implode with only made in the USA goods it is what it is.

That's right, our so-called leaders have gotten us into a tight corner, and no one seems to have an answer.

If there actually IS anything that can be done about it, surely the first step is Awareness. This is where The Media has failed us, along with our educational institutions. They treat us like mushrooms.

...it is not like they are paying the labour force appropriately so why all the added cost. The added profits are making the rich even richer.
Or....they are going to offset the losses from other divisions that are taking it on the chin because shoppers are notorious for only being willing to pay the bare minimum for what they think something SHOULD cost and then squawk at any price increase.

Just saying...

When patriotism meets economics in a thread I always feel a little bit stupider for having read it.

In Poland from period '46-'91 (People's Republic od Poland) basically every factory belonged to the country, the private manufacturers were rather small. No unemployed people - everyone had to be employed. We were basically making everything - cars, food, electronics, and so musical instruments. Everything Made in Poland. Why this all crashed ? Not because it was economically low-efficient. But because of people, who wanted consumption, who wanted the west. How does it ended ? For today about 2,5 million people here is unemployed, and gets no rent from the country.

Nothing similiar with patriotism. Bussiness is bussiness, no matter where you live. Thats why Fender is moving slowly to another countries (like China and Mexico)

I don't think you understand me. I am referring specifically to a) economic protectionism that is grounded in emotional patriotism/nationalism rather than any sound economic reasoning, and more importantly b) the fallacious logic that is inherent in judging something good or bad purely on the basis of where it comes from, or from whom it comes. To appeal to prejudices surrounding something's origin, source, or context is just as fallacious as an ad hominem attack.

All the same, this is not a debate anyone going to have here on Talkbass. Conservatively, it is against the rules, and is usually a waste of time for everyone.

I've seen Indonesian-made Laklands go for north of $1,000 so I know the pain.

I will bite on this one.

I have one of these Laklands. Fit and finish wise, it is comparible to my Indo G&L which cost half as much. But...that is where the similarities end. The Lakland simply is a superior player when compared to any other four string I own. I have other plek'd instruments, and they just aren't as good. I am a 100% believer that the guy running the plek machine is critical to the process. I don't know if I got lucky or if they are all this good, but my Skyline's neck is special. I have played instruments 3 to 4 times the price that do not play as well.

None of this is a function of country of origin or country of setup. A great instrument is a great instrument. Period.
