Double Bass Jazz - Now Playing

OC5qcGVn.jpeg

A trio of mid 90s releases from the defunct Postcard label with trombonist Julian Priester and saxophonist Sam Rivers. The music on all leans heavily to the free side. All are from OOP CDs, but they can be streamed on Spotify and possibly elsewhere.

From 1994, led by bassist Reggie Workman with Andrew Hill on piano and Pheeroan akLaff on drums.

From 1995, again led by Workman with Geri Allen on piano and Al Foster and Gerry Hemingway on drums.

Finally from 1996 Priester and Rivers with electronics provided by Tucker Martine.

Keep ‘em coming! You’ve got a unique ability to always chime in with exactly the player I need to hone in on for where I’m at in my development, Troy, and I’m very grateful to go on this Leroy Vinnegar deep dive. ‘55-‘56 is my favorite era of this music, it would seem.

Oh man, I got that record when I was in high school, and 40+ years later the duo Dexter and NHØP do on Old Folks still kills me. That opening phrase Niels plays is so beautiful I stole it (with a slight adaptation) to use on the duo record I did with Harry Allen
Amazingly good. It's rare to hear something that creative and well performed. Thanks for posting it.

Running some errands this afternoon listening to this gem of an ensemble. Teddy Kotick is just so solid — he never plays more than the song needs. I wish this group had more than one album as they are magnificent. I have it on vinyl too, but the CD sounds better in my truck than streaming media.
