Double Bass Jazz - Now Playing

Ah, you know about Rega's and shims. You know, I did an experiment on Invalid Link Removed (hopefully it's ok to share the link) as there is a bit of controversy over VTA and its impact on Rega turntables. Anyway, you can cheat and just check out the thread, or you can try to see if you hear a difference and can guess which samples have the 2mm shim/spacer. From my Audio Karma Post:

Alright, so there is a bit of controversy over VTA and Rega turntables. Rega says it's insignificant and others claim it's critically important to maximizing sound quality. In regards to my recent VM540ML installation (Planar 3), some say a 2mm spacer will be required to achieve the best results, others say it doesn't need a spacer.

All that sald - I made some rips with and without the spacer to see what everyone thinks. I'm not going to specify which is which, I'm doing this as kind of a blind test to see if anyone can actually tell the difference.

All of the tone controls on my Parasound 2100 Preamp are set flat and lossless wav files were created using Audacity.

In the early 70s Sun Ra signed with Impulse but only 2 or 3 titles were issued. This one was a new recording that hadn’t previously come out on Saturn (Ra’s homegrown label) and it was in quad! At the time, the folks at Impulse realized that the sales of jazz albums were much lower than pop albums so there was no reason to issue separate stereo and quad versions. They started issuing quad only (which played fine in stereo) until labels abandoned quad altogether in the late 1970s.

Anyone listened to Robert Glasper? Curious to discover his music. I was thinking about getting In my element and also Not Tight by Domi and JD Beck.

Been listening to him for a few months now, mainly with Vicente Archer and Justin Tyson. This caught my ear a while back, especially the part between 31:45 to 39:15 or so. Not a DJ fan (or a jazz vocalist fan) at all, but Dr. King's voice and the overall tone of the tune was absolutely moving, especially given the events of the last few years. Bob doesn't have to sing well, and he doesn't. It still works. I was told a few months ago that this is a Radiohead cover, which I did not know.

If this man had just a bit more Gil Scott-Heron in him, he'd be a total BA. Him and Christian Scott (Atunde Adjuah) are two youngish guys whose not playing straight ahead in a totally traditional style doesn't bother me.

I've been listening to small combo jazz in small club livestreams- mainly Mezzrow Jazz Club (someone here played there and posted it. I don't recall the username, but thanks so much! That was the first time I'd ever heard of the place and now I listen almost daily). Bass/Piano/Drums is my favorite combo, and that channel has it in spades, because it's such a small venue. Also Smalls (which is Mezzrow's sister club, so to speak), Beckett and Bird (a bookstore in SF). I'm quite happily digging myself into a rut here, haven't listened to anything but trios in months.

Not piano, but very cool.

Thanks I'll check this out!

I ended up buying the two album I was thinking. I will give a few more listening to In My Element but right now, I just don't have that going back to it feeling. Does that make sense? I'm not drawn to it that much.

I also got Not Tight by Domi & JD Beck, there is a few song that are a bit too much on the hip-hop side for my taste, especially the track with Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dog and other.

What I have been enjoying the most is the overall pieces feeling. It doesn't feel like head, piano solo, drum solo. There is a really nice arc to the piece so much that it doesn't even feel like there is solo sometime. It feel so natural, even the odd time signature it just flow so well.
Smile is probably my favorite, the pieces with Thundercat are amazing, especially when he is trading solo with Domi. The piece with Kurt Rosenwinkel and the one with Herbie Hancock are very nice. Overall, I would have like a longer album, feels like it is too short and also beware there is barely any 4/4.
