Double Bass Jazz - Now Playing

Screenshot_20240402-161528.png

I pretty much have a revolving jazz playlist playing on our cigar shop house system all day, but at home I was playing along with this on my fretless/flat wounds with a fat Pickboy Modrez. Man, is it HEAVY stuff. Highly recommended.

I am rediscovering Ron Miles, whom I first heard ages ago on a Bill Frisell album he perfectly fit into. I love his sound, like he himself is constantly surprised with all the innocent beauty coming out of his trumpet.

/edit: ah the format. I like to sit on the couch, triangled with Yamaha studio monitors fed with mp3s by a soundcard fed by a computer. I cannot do anything else when listening music, the only exception is rollerblading where need Elvin Jones to push me. Call me ignorant but I am not able to tell the difference between aif flac or mp3 with a decent data rate. I don’t do streaming but there are 1.2 Tb on the drive (with three backups, after I once lost everything), mostly almost exclusive jazz and classic.

Let's try something, not sure if it will catch on, but let's see. I'd be interested in knowing what jazz you were all listening to at various times.

I'll post for a while and invite others to do the same and if it fizzles out, it wasn't meant to be, but maybe it won't.

Let's keep it to jazz, if someone wants to start classical, bluegrass, rock-a-billy threads, that might be cool to.

  • What are you listening to?
  • What format?
  • On what equipment?
  • Whatever else you feel is relevant - Personnel, Label, etc.
Inaugural post:

The Poll Winners
Barney Kessel, Ray Brown, Shelly Mann
Contemporary Records/Stereo (first pressing)

Creek Stereo, Epos Speakers, Rega turntable

Someone asked for guitar trio recommendations last year and I looked for that thread a bit, because THIS. Contemporary Records had a great house sound. Slightly different than Blue Note, but equal to it in warmth and clarity. Ray is being Ray here and with guitar instead of heavy handed piano, it's a great reference.

I always thought Contemporary had one of the best sounds, especially for bass.

I just spent two months with the 1992 "GRP All Stars Big Band" album playing in my car. I think I can subconsciously sing all the solos ^^

I really like the arranging there, and the versatility. They commissioned from different arrangers for each track, so it's great to see the different personalities across the arrangements. Also the performance is great of course.
