In my opinion you can't make a neck thin enough thickness wise. The Geddy is soooo smooth playing; I wish I had the neck off of one. Also the width of the J is sooo nice. I modified my Jazz to B-E-A-D instead of playing a 5er... Just more proof I like a dainty neck.

In the looks department the body of the P just looks clunky to me compared to the smoothness of the jazz. It just looks and feels "Right" to me.

I haven't compared pickups, but a lot of guys like a P and J bridge combo... My active jazz suits me just fine.

Slightly off topic. I got my first J yesterday (used MIM), and it is in bad need of strings. What would you recommend as I would like to begin experimenting with more Jazz and Funk styles? Flatwounds? (My P's have DR extra bright and EB Hybrid Slinky). Thanks for your thoughts.

Not slightly, completely off topic.

I picked the P, but I actually like both together. I have my P-bass with a Jazz neck. I simply hate the Jazz body. I can't stand the look, feel or the anything about it. I also really dislike the look of the block inlays. I love the p-bass body (with a Jbass bridge pup) and I like the Jazz nut width way better than the P..
The MIM Precision Special is my kind of bass. The best of both worlds IMHO...

I normally wouldn't get sucked into one of these P vs J threads, but I have been experimenting with my new bass quite a bit and have concluded that I have a J that transcends the J in a way that lets me play deep into the P realm... and this bass is a Nordy vJ4, with passive Big Singles. The Nordy has IMO the best J neck made and the Big Singles with the neck pick-up soloed (or with a little bridge rolled up) produces a massively thick, meaty tone that rivals the P. It may not exactly sound P due to the P's split coil, but it sounds huge.

So, I guess I vote carrots... and play something different.

I have both and would vote both. If I had to go with just one I would say Jazz for versatility, but there is something about the P that makes me go for it first.
