PERFECT ANSWER! i use a P/J combo..i like the looks of a p body! i like the profile of a jazz neck, i like the boom of a p pickup, i like the buttery snarl of a jazz pup when needed...guess what i have ALL these feature in ONE BASS!

Sorry to sound redundant, but there's a lot more to it than pickup configuration. (body, neck)


You guys are talking about a hybrid between a P and a J.

Nothing wrong with that.

But it's not exactly best of both worlds... just a compromise.



So, wich do you like more then? a P/J precision bass or a P/J jazz bass?

Or a P/J precision bass with a jazz neck or a P/J jazz bass with a precision neck?

I'm going to have to agree with the PJ setup.
Like I said above, I only like the bridge pickup tone on a Jazz bass, so with the proper wiring configuration on a PJ, I can have both a P bass and as much of the Jazz bass as I ever found useful, with no compromise except for the extra string pull of the Jazz pickup when the P is soloed...

I built a single pickup Jazz bass, but I am in the process of having it rerouted for a P bass pickup in the neck position.
It should be a perfect combination of true P bass tone and Jazz bridge pickup tone.

Win-win...

You can make a jazz have the P Bass sound but the P Bass only sounds like a P Bass.

I've owned P's and J's and PJ's and I like each type for it's own merits. But I think Jazz's suit my playing style and tonal needs better than anything else that I've tried. Right now I only own one bass, a stock MIA Jazz. If I had GAS money I'd add a fretless Jazz and be a happy camper.

I like both..each one has it's own application and sound. I can't say I like one particularly over the other,but if I had to choose,it'd be p bass just because of the neck.

Jazz = Nice mellow tone / Smaller Neck, Precision - Punchier tone / Wider Neck. I tend to lean towards the Jazz over the Precision in most cases. When I jam with friends (3 guitarist + drummer or two) I usually will pick the P to cut through the guitars.

I'm gonna go with the Jazz - sound is very flexible...hit that neck pickup for some low end thump, dial in the bridge pickup for some jazz/slap/pop tone.

I would agree that a P/J pickup configuration is a better option - best of both worlds that way.

Pbass. Jazz basses don't have the output that I like, or the tone. I wouldn't mind a thinner neck on my MIA pbass, but it's still fine to play and well worth the minor comfort sacrifice for that booming tone.

I love them both but if I had to choose I would go with the Jazz because of more definition in the upper register while retaining a good low end. However the J neck pu is no match for a P pu. Ok I like the hybrid solution.

i think the same way...i've used both, and currently neither, although i own a jazz...i'd like a precision again though, they feel better to me and i like the sound quite a bit for most things

I like the tone and narrow neck of the Jazz, it seems to fit my hands alot better than a p bass.
