Prior to owning any Fenders, I never like the appearance of the Jazz body shape. But after getting my first Fender (a Deluxe P Special ) I was sold on Fender, and with all the raves about the '08 American Jazz, I quickly doubled my collection of Fenders in as many weeks.

Aside from the fact one is Mexican and one is American, what strikes me about the Jazz is that shape I originally didn't like make the bass feel so balanced when playing it ... it's just so comfortable to play when strapped on. Not that a Precision is uncomfortable ... it's just that the Jazz seems to sit a little bit better than any other bass I've played.

Made it easy to decide to get a Jazz V when I needed 5-strings!

is there an easy definition between a "p neck" and a "j neck". i know ive played em both but i cant define it well... there seems to be a difference from what i can tell, since people make franken basses all the time with there own preferences. anybody wanna shed some light?

The necks are one of my reasons for going jazz. The P bass typically has a nut width of 1.625" to 1.75". Js are typically 1.5". I like the more narrow spacing.

Also I recently figured out that what I need sonically comes from a pickup closer to the bridge.

it depends on the situation, but I prefer my Jazz bass for recording and my P bass for playing live.this is a hard one to pick for me.

Without a doubt, P. I did feel I could get good growl on my P with some really new stainless-steel strings and with mids jacked up. I feel that the P sometimes has too boomy lows when the tone knob is rolled all the way down, but with some clever EQ, that can be solved! The P certainly can get an universe of sonic possibilities, as previously espoused by someone.

Well, according to my name, it should be obvious that my preference is the Jazz. However, I have played some fine P Basses. When it coms down to it, I love the Jazz for the narrow neck and the sound diversity. The tone diversity really comes through on my fretless, which I can use to get any tone from Jaco to upright-ish (and I can even get a decent fretless P-Bass tone from my little Jazz).

I need to buy me a P-Bass for the tone one of these days, but I'll wait until I get my student loans paid off before worrying about that! I hear P-Bass Specials are nice...
