Jazz pickups that sound like a Precision

If I wanted to replace the pickups in my Jazz... to make it sound more like a Precision... what pickups should I consider? Looking for high quality stuff... price is not a concern. Thanks...

I've done it, and the series mode is very P-ish.

Actually, it was a serious question. I've played my MIA Precision for years... so I already own one.

I recently picked up an older MIA 62 RI Jazz. Absolutely the nicest most comfy feel good neck I've ever held. I'm liking the small radius fretboard. Love the feel of this bass. Not too sure about the sound. I actually thought about sending that neck onto my Precision.

I'm not hip to the sound of this Jazz. And it might be that the pickups in it could simply use some help. Don't know if they've been changed or if they're stock or if they're just not working right. I'm very, very aware of what a Precision should feel, play and sound like. A Jazz is a new beast. But I just love how this one feels in my hands. Never thought I'd say that about a bass!

OK... recommend me pickups that would sound like more like a Precision AND recommend me some pickups that would make this sound like the Jazz bass it was meant to be. I am going to do something to this bass... just feels too good!!

I actually thought about sending that neck onto my Precision.

Install a MIJ '62 J neck on a P body & you'll get both the feel of the neck and the sound you're looking for. It's a pretty common combination.

Agree with the Model J recommendations... They have a nice low end, robust mid presence, and a very round top (i.e. not snappy like a lot of J pickups can be). Have them in my J, and it's the only way that I could really like the sound. I could never gel with that "J sound." And they're heavenly with flats...

But, no matter what, you're not going to cop a P tone 100% if it's not a P. But the Model Js can get you most of the way there.

Something I've always wanted to try is a Dimarzio Model J in the neck position and a Dimarzio Ultra Jazz in the bridge position.

Sort of a PJ without changing the pickup routs.

I think Nordstrand also makes a split J pickup that could do the job. Good luck. I think the thing I dislike most about Jazzes is the body shape. I like the square butt of the P-Bass a lot better.

I'd strongly suggest you go the series/parallel route first; if that gives you the oomph you're after, you're done, at minimal expense. A switched pot is about $10, and this mod is a DIY, if you can solder.

I think the position of the P pickup doesn't quite match the J neck pickup, does it?

In any case, swap the necks. I might also add that you could sell the Jazz and buy a Sadowsky metro hybrid P/J. Also a Tony Franklin Fretted might suit you. They sound great, though I prefer them with the fretless neck.

I don't believe pickup swaps are going to give you what you want.

+1. Not exactly a P-Bass sound but closer to a P-Bass sound than a Jazz Bass sound out of a J-style pickup IMO.
