I am lucky enough to play with a 61 year old drummer who toured briefly with Wilson Pickett while he was in his 20's. He has taught me a lot as a bass player. I'm no spring chicken myself, but nothing can compare to learning from someone with that many years if experience. Ed I love your books - bring it on
It's not like you have to play a single genre, you can be a jazzer by day and a rocker all night.
If all you want to do is know how to say "Hodor", then that is all you need to know how to say.
But if you want to actually speak the language, it's as difficult as mastering any language out there, more so in some senses. Most guys aren't equipped to deal with that level of effort.

Who's worried about 60 year olds attracting rock players - aren't all the biggest concert draws (Stones, McCartney, Springsteen etc.) older than that?
It seems like we have this same discussion every week or two. The title keeps changing, but the real question is, "Is ignorance better than knowledge?"
I think it's bigger than that. I think it's "Work is hard. Can I just do this without doing work???"

It's the difference between being a musician and be a person that plays an instrument. I'm not even suggesting that everyone needs to become an accomplished musician, but I do wish they would stop trying to justify ignorance.
Agreed - but it sounds like we've both met guys who INSIST that they don't need to do the WORK. Now, if you just want to "rock" - then sure. You really don't need to do the work. If you want a bit more, however...
