But serious like, didn't someone put up a "blind challenge" thread here like a year ago? Audio clips of both P and J, and we were supposed to judge them blind. That was most instructive. Please to post that thread again.

I don't fine either P or J neck to be faster than the other ... any bass neck can be fast if the bass is setup correctly ( unless its a total POS )
I prefer a P necks ( 70's style ).... Jazz necks feel too small to me ... fretless version of the jazz neck has grown on me a little though

Neither is better! They are just different. I like both, but if I had to choose, this week I prefer J basses Ask me again next week and probably get a different answer...

How about a PJ Bass - has both P and J pickups. That should cover it.
P bass usually has wider necks. J Bass necks should be fine for you.

both are good. I prefer J because the tone is brighter and more nasal, its better for jazz, fusion, soloing, etc. P seems to be more fat, dark and vintage, great for old school funk

I think it's funny that a topic like this, which has been done a zillion times, still brings plenty of responses. It's a popular topic for a reason, new players are curious. I know one of the first questions I asked at our local music store back when I started bass was what's the difference between a P and a J. The clerk in the store was sharp, and said that most players have one of each, and I probably should, too.
