Jealous bass players?!

I don't because there will always be someone that is better then you, has a more interesting approach or is more creative. On the flip side I went to view three pages of bass players covering a simple Judas Priest song Living after midnight and only one guy could play it like it is supposed to be played, more like a bass player then a guitar player on bass. I don't know if this is representative of the General bass population or that it's only hacks who have time to post on Youtube leaving the pros with real bass work?

I never got jealous but I admit to being very envious over another players ability. That still happens from time to time but it's something that doesn't ruin my day. Heard a bass player (local guy) about 2 years ago and he was flat out amazing. Played things that I would never dream of playing. But then, his approach was much more out of the box where my approach is more straight forward. He really knew how to spice things up while still providing a strong bottom for the band. Wish I could do that but that's him and I'm just me. Met him afterwards and he's one of the nicest people I ever met.

Again, not jealous but VERY envious and he did inspire me.

Mike M understands the difference between jealous and envious.

I admit to having been both. Jealous after giving up my spot as bass player to someone with much less experience and musicianship, and envious of others whose playing I can't come close to matching. Both feelings are going away with time...

I like Mike M's take as well.

An old friend of mine likes to toss around this little ironic joke that goes, "If you can't be someone else, who can you be?"

As much as I still appreciate this bit of humor, for me the reality is just that. I sometimes get bored watching others do what I can already do when I'm in learning mode (which is most of the time), so when I see something great, I don't get jealous; I get obsessive about wanting to figure out what they're doing. Steal enough tasty goodies from enough killer players and before you know it, you got cats envious of you!

Then you can pay it forward by showing them how to do what you can do ... unless they're the jealous type in which case they can't be reached. I got no time for jealous types.

It ain't what you can play, its what you can write...

Fancy dancy razzle dazzle technique gets boring after about 5 minutes... 1 minute, if your audience isn't comprised of all other bass players.

But write a great song and people will admire and love you.

PS: I don't get jealous of other bass players but I sure as hell get jealous of people that can sing. lol

Testify, brother!

Man, I dig this sentiment. I'm as much a sucker for great playing ability as the next chump, but it don't mean nothing without a song. Writing good songs is a higher art form than blazing chops, IMO.
