Jealous bass players?!

No! I am inspired by better players and I enjoy hearing them play. I have been comfortable with my playing capabilities and limitations for a long time. Even in my relatively small neck of the woods I have some monster players locally and I love going out and hearing them. LOVE IT! I just love good bass playing....

Inspired by creativity, never jealous of skill. Odd to say, but I'm as good at bass and guitar as I expect to ever be, and I'm quite ok with it. I have a few books on scales and theory that I'll get to, but I can play most things by ear, enjoy my own creativity and have no interest in setting speed records. Seeing a band of 17 year old kids create a catchy song and playing it with passion, whether it's sloppy or amazing, that I love.

heck no, I usually ask the dude what he was doing so I can steal it! but I think I have a kid who is jealous of me for some stupid reason and I have been nothing but helpful to this jerk. I think he is better than me too which makes it even weirder. I handed him an amazing band on a silver platter after I had my kid. now he just a straight up jerk to me and tries to bass block me every chance he gets.

I'm with most everyone else. I get inspired and hit the woodshed...reletlessly. Most of it's in technique, honestly.

For whatever reason, when I was a kid, I decided I really didn't want to learn what other people played. Of course I've learned bass lines here and there as I needed or wanted to and most were because they're just really fun to play, or even just wanted to learn something that would be a challenge. Songs like For Whom The Bell Tolls, The Trooper, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Give It Away, Iron Man, From The Cradle To Enslave, and Spiderwebs (No Doubt; Thought I'd throw in an oddball). You get the idea.

No. If that were the case I'd be jealous of most of you guys and gals on this forum.

Jealousy is counter-productive and mostly hurts the one who is jealous. Anyone who is a better bass player than me likely deserves it. He or she probably applied themselves, took lessons, practiced harder, etc.

This principle applies to many things in life.

Mostly inspired. I came to terms long ago that I can't be or have what everyone else is or does. I despise competition and enjoy appreciating everybody's differences and strengths as well as being comfortable with my own.

Jealousy is such a negative emotion. I've heard players that just blew my socks off. Sometimes it makes me want to go home and woodshed, other times it makes me want to give up completely. But in the end, I enjoy it, and the only person I'm really trying to be better than is me, yesterday. Some people sure do have "it" though don't they. But I suspect if you asked most of those people they'd say roughly the same thing about themselves vs. other players.
