Jeff Andrews passed away?

Discussion in 'Bassists [BG]' started by joe vegas, Mar 15, 2019.

  1. Jimmy Coppollo wrote to me on facebook, asking if i heard. i knew Jeff since the late 70s and stayed in touch over the recent years. this would be horrible news. Jeff was killin' it again and gigging in brooklyn, also started a new teaching forum etc. Any verifiable news?

Jeff, and Charlie Whiting had both died in the past day or so. Who's next, to make the triumvirate? :crying:

I just heard it this morning :-( on Facebook many famed players who knew him shared news of his passing...horrible news, a huge loss...
  5. Rufus Philpot mentioned Jeff's passing on facebook a few hours ago. Sad, sad news.
What the *** happened? Jeff wasn't that old.
A monster, monster, monster player, one of my all time favourites.

Just awful news, one of the most overlooked of the bass monsters of the last 40 years.

He was a true great who played with Mike Stern, Brecker, Shorter, Steps Ahead, Vital Information, Jimi Tunnell, Tom Coster and many more. He also started the famous gigs at the 55 Bar and invited Mike Stern to play with him there.

I remember seeing Jeff at the 55 early on with Mike and of course in the Mike Brecker/Stern and Bob Berg/Stern bands as well as with Vital Information and Steps Ahead.

A true giant who will be missed.

I'm so sorry to hear the news. He was a very underrated bassist who never received his due, IMO.

In the early day of Rare Blend, while we were writing our original material, we did cover songs, "Snap Out Of It!" being the VI one we did.

    First song on this:

Only thing I've found out is that Jeff had double pneumonia earlier this year.

Being honest, I've never heard of Jeff Andrews before. I don't listen to much Jazz, but after listening to the posted videos I am just blown away! He was a phenomenal player! RIP Jeff.

I had some correspondence with him last year and got a ton of info on how he navigated diminished and secondary dominants. He was seriously one of the most monster players out there. RIP

    One of my favorite players.

Incredible groove and harmonic knowledge. He was one of those rare electric bass players that killed on straight ahead gigs as well as fusion.

    Too young...

RIP Jeff. Man, I thought I was getting out of this week on a high note. Being right there in age is scary too.

At this pace over the last couple of years, are there enough colts in the stable to fill these vacancies? I hope so.

Apparently, Jeff Andrews suffered from pneumonia. 59 is not ancient, but it is old not to make you susceptible to severe infections.
