Jeff Beck and Tal... together

in my humble but considered opinion

here are a couple of young female bass players who play and play well.

i have revisited the tal videos several times as i am aware of how much mood affects one's listening and appreciation - but every time i end up getting bored really quickly as i am not seeing anything that hasn't been done before or done better and her contributions aren't particularly interesting to listen to. i wish her luck - some day she may be a really fine player but i don't feel she is yet and thus i am always curious why she gets all of the attention.

What's with the "young female" bassist comparisons? :spit:

First of all, Tal is not THAT young. She is comparable in age to many talented professional players. If you are critiqueing her playing style or talent, why do you feel it necessary to include and compare her to other "young females". Seriously...do you not see the narrowness of your comment? :rollno:

Now, now children. Relax.

I personally love Tal, and go through her entire album about once a day.. and through headphones, I cant see her, so her tone must be pretty good.

IMO, of course.

Just remember guys, using the three letters "IMO" help a lot.. TB is a place of opinions, dont take so much offense to them.

TWhen I watch a live performance I want my head to bob, goose bumps to appear and a smile on my face. I don't care if I hear something that's never been done, I just want to hear music done well. I saw jb and tal on Palladia and was moved. Couldn't ask for more, certainly not more notes, tricks or pocket as it was a well cooked music meal.

I agree. If you havent seen them live at Crossroads, in '04 I believe, please do. Changed my outlook on female bassists, no offense!

Given time and good mentoring she has the potential to develop into a very good player.
Her playing is too choopy for my taste, they are not very musical.

All I have to say to the bolded statements is WOW. Just WOW! The part about her not being musical is probably the most baffling comment of all. Tal is VERY musical, melodic, has great sense of rhythm, and judging by the Transformation CD a great writer and uses her theory knowledge to her advantage. How many time signatures are on that CD? :)

We are all entitled to our opinions but to say that she has the "potential" to "develop into a very good player" is like..Wow...I'm just baffled at that comment. She IS ALREADY a GREAT player. She may not play the way you want her to but that does not mean she is not good. She has found her voice and she is growing as we ALL should be regardless of what level we're at as musicians.

Wow! All of these people hating on Tal. Leave her alone. LOL You can say she got the oppportunities based on her looks until you're blue in the face like this :( or this :bawl: but the fact remains that she would not have any high profile gigs if she did not have high profile skills on the bass. Sure, her looks are appealing but come on! Jeff Beck? Chick Corea? Wayne Krantz? Hmmmmmmmmmmm! You do the math!

Personally I think that she's an excellent bassist for her age(She's no Jaco yet I admit-but tell me who can play like he did at that age) and she fits in nicely with Jeff Beck and Co...I've seen her up close -first row live twice and the Blu-Ray DVD about 20 times...I respect her and the band more each time I see them...it's easy to criticize...but its hard to get selected to get the gig by commenting in chatrooms, criticizing your fellow bassists, though you are certainly free to do so if you think its getting you anywhere...personally I think Jeff Beck picked her as mentioned after Vinnie told her about her as mentioned above( he tells the story of how she was discovered on the Blu-Ray DVD) and gave her the job because she was an excellent player who fit in with the chemistry of the group...not because she was cute. Jeff, Vinnie and Jason are the top players of thier respected instruments in the world...I'd tend to think they probably knew what they were doing when they brought here on. If anyone thinks they can do better than Tal, though...just send Jeff a CD of your playing...you never know, I'm sure he's an equal opportunity employer ;)? Peace...DAcat

+1111111111 Exactly!!

You just HAD to go there, huh? I can dig it. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

Now that's out of the way, I TOTALLY agree with you. Tal is a great bassist--male or female.

What, you're not always looking for a gig? Oh that's right - everyone here is fully booked with studio time, I forgot...

It's funny because you don't have any steady gigs listed in your profile.

Who should I give more creedence to - Chick Corea, or a guy looking for gigs?

Hey, you're entitled to your opinion (everybody is), but I'm highly doubtful you could play as well as the person who's being sought out for top-tier gigs.

Girl, I hear you. I just noticed that there is another thread talking about bassists that are "not very good." Wow! There are a LOT of people on TB who spend their energy hating on other bassists--male or female--instead of using that time and energy on their own musical development.

Exactly! Its a lot easier to criticize other players than it is to critque ourselves.

I'm always amazed though at how off the mark Tal's haters are. Sure they are entitled to like whatever style they like but trying to say she's not a worthy player or talk about her as if she's just a cute little girl out of her league LOL. I'm with you...WOW! Haha They don't know Tal.

I like Tal's playing much more than a lot of other well known bassists out there. To be at that level at that age is astonishing. It's got nothing to do with being female at all imo.

i think a lot of the negative comments are due to jealously in that she has musically accomplished more in her small time playing than other people will have in their lifetime.
