Jeff Berlin apology

I'm very fortunate to have studied with Jeff and his lovely wife, and he's really a very good guy. He is very passionate about his method of teaching and it works, but it's just ONE way to learn. Personally, I benefit more from how Victor Wooten teaches. Music is an art. Yes, there is a science to it, and if you learn music academically as Jeff has taught for years, you will be a good player. But that's not music to me. Music is what you feel.

It's always a great thing when someone realizes their faults and takes steps to better themselves.

I'm the tall guy behind Roy Vogt, second from the left. On the far left is Howard Ulyate....if you want some killer pickups...he's your guy.

I'd extrapolate that by what he said, he was raised that way, and in my own experience, in Classical music, the dogmatic teaching of it can exclude any other possible approach, the reason I refused a scholarship in piano to North Texas State. I know this outlook.

That he's one of the handful of bassists with extraordinary talent is without question. But he was impossible to live with.

We are a forgiving people, and most are a big exponent of the Second Chance. I think JB may find that being approachable and empathetic in sharing his gifts and knowledge will be far more satisfying in his new role as Ebenezer Scrooge after the long night with the three ghosts than the fella that went to sleep 8 hours before.

He may have a lot of bridges to rebuild, but I'm pulling for him.

I once had a lesson with Roy Vogt, Bass Chair at Belmont here in Nashville, and he was wonderful, and made me feel like I was a contemporary of his, not some 10-thumbed hack, and I'm sure I got more from that one lesson with RV than hours with anyone else. These are the kinds of people JB should take his cues from, and I believe he'll be pleasantly surprised they'd love to do it.

Good for him. Recognizing and accepting your flaws and your mistakes in behavior is a huge step. I have a feeling that Steve and Victor will have no problems patching things up and I wish Jeff the best on his continuing journey. He's a heck of a player and educator, and it looks like he's trying to be a heck of a human being. That's to be applauded and encouraged.

Very cool.

I'm just happy for him that he's in a better place. The kind if trash talk he did for years came from a miserable individual. I just hope he's not miserable anymore. I spent a little time with both Steve and Vic. If nothing else they are both people who walk with grace. They show people huge amounts of grace. Hopefully Jeff qualifies for their grace as well.

Jeff is not "cured". But this is a big step. I hope he keeps taking more steps in that direction. He's too talented to be shut out if ue can become/stay a more kind person.

It definitely seems to be sincere. As JB said, he has been back and forth with past apologies, meaning the motivation for his past apologies were not particularly generated from noble & positive feelings.
This video seems to be an apology motivated by the desire for self improvement rather than by some nefarious reason to gain something or to get out of trouble. That’s a good thing and shows some personal growth of JB as a person.

Just reading about Jeff and the things he’s said over the years. I myself, never took his criticisms of others seriously. He’s always been a driven kind of person. It doesn’t excuse his behavior, I just never condemned the guy either.

Glad he does realize that it’s not the best way to spread the word on expanding musical knowledge or cooperation with others in doing so. Wish him peace and hopes that he works more closely with other educators.
