Brilliant video, only watched half so far, and so far, agree with Jeff's views on music education.
I haven't heard his 'rants' and from what I've heard here, he isn't a master of diplomacy, too say the least, but he talks a lot of sense, imo.
First of all, I should state that I’m not referring directly to Jeff. Some of the most brilliant artists were considered flawed in relation to their social behaviour, Jaco would’ve been diagnosed as bipolar today, and I suspect there’s many others that have to deal with some type of condition. I did work with someone that had chronic OCD, and towards the end of his life he would spend time in care. These conditions are talked about more today, but I would guess that many more people with OCD, Bipolar disorder, etc, than are known. It can become impossible to work with these people, even when they have the best intentions, and alcohol only makes things a lot worse.
So I repeat:
I still think that those who engage in belittling JB are maybe more than just a little bit envious of his skills and stature. Just my observation.
So what exactly is his stature and with whom? He’s not Louis Armstrong nor was he a member of Armstrong’s Hot Five or Hot Seven. He’s not Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, or Coltrane, nor did he play with any of them. He’s not Steve Swallow or Jaco Pastorius. I’m certainly not jealous of any of them so why would I be jealous of Mr. Berlin?
