Jeff Berlin apology

First of all, I should state that I’m not referring directly to Jeff. Some of the most brilliant artists were considered flawed in relation to their social behaviour, Jaco would’ve been diagnosed as bipolar today, and I suspect there’s many others that have to deal with some type of condition. I did work with someone that had chronic OCD, and towards the end of his life he would spend time in care. These conditions are talked about more today, but I would guess that many more people with OCD, Bipolar disorder, etc, than are known. It can become impossible to work with these people, even when they have the best intentions, and alcohol only makes things a lot worse.

Just to clarify, Jaco was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and spent time in hospital. These ailments were known back in the 80's. In Trujillo's (did I schpell that rite?) documentary they interview his attending physician who explained Jaco's diagnosis as a "mixed state" bipolar disorder. The physician went on to explain that Jaco - like so many other patients dealing with a mental health diagnosis was resisting/denying the problem. Had he lived longer he might have been able to accept the condition and get it under control.

Just an FYI to flesh out your reference to Jaco, not to argue with anything you said.

So I repeat:
I still think that those who engage in belittling JB are maybe more than just a little bit envious of his skills and stature. Just my observation.

So what exactly is his stature and with whom? He’s not Louis Armstrong nor was he a member of Armstrong’s Hot Five or Hot Seven. He’s not Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, or Coltrane, nor did he play with any of them. He’s not Steve Swallow or Jaco Pastorius. I’m certainly not jealous of any of them so why would I be jealous of Mr. Berlin?

You've mentioned a lot of people he's not, and that's because he's Jeff Berlin, a world class bass player.
