JHS Punchline

Received the Punchline a couple weeks ago. First impression is... I like it. A couple of complaints like everyone else, needs an aux in and headphone out plus a tuner. But, I like no tuner over a cheap tuner. I'd rather use my TU3 than deal with a flaky built-in tuner. I can deal with no aux / headphone jacks. I am not a fan of the knobs, seems like not many are. I like the tone I am getting tho, which matters more to me that the rest. I want to open it up and see how much free space is left inside... this thing is huge!

On another note, I spent a few minutes goofing around with settings at home last night. I had never cranked the amp sim gain all the way before. It's a little weird on its own, and the difference from 9.5 to 10 is almost like flipping a switch, haha! But DUDES. Push the amp sim gain to 10, THEN kick on the drive channel! WHOA!!! I just riffed on nonsense and giggled for a solid 10 mins. 🤣 I've got to work that in somewhere, somehow, haha!
Tried this on my P bass with steel strings! It really does saturate so nicely. Tried it next on my Serek short scale with flats and it was perfectly saturated tone. Kicked on my Octaver and everything was stable and lots of slam. I hate when an Octaver creates down stream farting or unwanted overdrive - but the Punchline just handles it. The Punchline seems to have a ton of headroom.

Awesome!

I played with a bit of drive turned on at the Punchline for the first time ever this past Sunday. We had a newer song that was just begging for some drive and playing with a pick. After service the guitar came over and said "Dude. That overdrive was AMAZING. How did you get that tone?" and I walked him over to the Punchline, talked about the clean blend, etc. He plays bass in his home recordings and said this morning's tone was the sound he was always trying to get but couldn't quite find.

Regarding headroom, you're absolutely correct! I had another bass player over last night and let him goof around with the PL and he said the same thing. It amazes me how the PL has SO MUCH clean headroom on a really low 9V draw, especially after coming from the 18v Tone Hammer pre before this. I just love the thing more and more every gig.

I received mine yesterday and for the 30 minutes or so that I messed around with it, I can say that I already love it. I wish I had purchased it sooner.

I thought I read that someone cranked the drive on the amp sim - tried it myself - kind of stunned that Black Sabbath is going to play a final show with Ozzy and especially Bill Ward! So this seemed like a good time experiment. My 4001 is an odd bird, so not necessarily representative, but here it is:

And attached are my settings

Another great service with the Punchline at church today!

What board is that and does it come with a bag or case? I am trying to find a board about that size... the PT Classic Jr is way to big for what I need. About to return it.

I would have said the pedal train mini but the back rail isn’t right and it’s too thin to be a metro 20. But both of those or the nano+ might serve your needs.

Personally I’m using the d’addario xpnd

Just this cheapo Amazon.com

There's no room for a power supply/brick underneath, FYI.

I use this tuner pedal with it to power my stuff instead Amazon.com

Super clean and simple, and I've had no problems gigging with it thus far. It DOES come with a specific 2-amp 9v adapter/power supply. A One-Spot won't cut it. I bought a different branded spare 2A 9v power supply on amazon to have as a backup in case one goes down/gets lost. The power supply looks & feels pretty cheap, and the cord length isn't terribly long. Feels like 12"-18" shorter than it SHOULD be, but I also always carry a ton of extension cords and power strips, etc.

If I were making my living playing bass, I would ABSOLUTELY get better/higher end stuff. But at this point in life it's just a fun hobby. I play out locally 3-5x a month and church 2-3x a month. I have "fallbacks" for everything in every situation, so if something goes down it's just an inconvenience and maybe I don't have the preferred tones/setup for the event, but not a show-ender.

@theos - I use the PT Nano+ for my Punchline and 3 other pedals. The power supply is the One Spot. A gig bag is included with the Nano+.

Ended up spending several days on my Cliff Burton tribute video - just 1976 4001 into JHS Punchline - yesterday was "Cliff Burton Day" (his birthday, also officially proclaimed by Castro Valley where he lived, fairly nearby to me in Oakland, CA) but couldn't get it together by then.

I'm still in love with this pedal...But, even more than that, I love seeing everyone's settings. Does anyone have any more settings they'd be interested in posting? I'm still dialing mine in but I enjoy trying what every one else is doing.
These are my general “build from here” settings. Comp, dirt, and EQ are the ones that get adjusted to compensate for the bass I’m playing and the the room I’m in etc.
