JMJ Mustang Bass String Recommendations

Maybe I’m just lucky but this is a sire U5 string through bass short 30” scale.

these cobalt flats are regular scale and wrap past the silk on the tuners and are holding up fine. I have broken labella’s trying this so if you want those be sure to get shorter scale.

Just ordered a set of Labella MUS, thanks!

I just tried again to intonate... strings 1-2-3 seem ok, the 4th is okay open and fretted at 12, but sharp at every other fret... the pitch oscillates and sounds "dead", the pitch seems to oscillate the same on 2nd string, like a chorus effect, even if that string is perfectly intonated at each fret. I even tried to lower the pickups but it wasn't the problem

Just guessing. Maybe the slot for the E string in the nut is too high?

I measured it under .010, it is a little bit more space than the other 3 strings but I think it is normal given it is the biggest string. Even if it was.. how is it possible that zeroing the open E and the fretted 12th E stil gives sharp notes (7-8 cents) even at the 7-8th fret?

Thanks so much for the help! Fender Mustang JMJ - E-string problems I found this thread talking about the same exact problems linked to the stock set of strings... incredible. Just ordered the labella MUS and hoping for the good. I will then re-intonate it carefully, and given that I loosen each string prior to moving the saddles, I hope to not damage the new strings. Do you think guys it is ok to set the witness point asap after stringing the bass and tuning it? Prior to the intonation process? I was thinking about this as I would move the saddles then, so the "witness points" are going to be moved and re-pushed

Right now I have a set of DR short scale flat wounds, which feel great but I'm sort of underwhelmed by the way they sound.

Basically, I'm asking any of you Mustang/Short Scale/Flat wound fans for your recommendations.

If you're still fighting with this: try lowering the pickup. If the pickup is too close, esp. to the E-string, the pitch will warble, more on higher frets than low.

flats you have to be more careful with since they can separate if you wind past the silk, but I have used cobalt flats that overwound and they were just fine. Labella gold flats broke when attempting on the mustang as the E separated at the peg.

REALLY want to try pressurewounds on a string-through vintage Mustang - the GHS short scale are too short, the long seem way too long, but @klattman these held up long term for you? Are there no medium scale pressurewounds out there??

Long scale pressurewounds are fine. Just don’t cut below the wrap and a few extra winds around the post and it has been fine for maybe 10 months so far.

I’ve used the Fender flats (meh) that came with the JMJ. I used GHS P flats (better), and I currently have DR Lo Riders stainless, long scale (yes some of the speaking length goes around the post but hasn't yet seemed to affect intonation nor clarity. For gigs I typically gravitate to a P-type sound with articulation, even if I’m using a J type bass. Love most flats, but for me in a live situation, I am never given, nor can I ever seem to carve out, the sonic space required for me to effectively use flats. For live use (for me), the Lo Riders on JMJ give me a very close approximation of a good Precision with thick midrange focus. Not the same level of lows or highs as a P, but passable in a mix for my purpose, and perhaps even a slight touch better at times than a P.
