Joe dart .. Ernie ball jazz !

I took the JD II along with my G&L Big Chonks to band rehearsal last night. In my little home studio, I noticed the output of the pickups was a little bit low but was curious to see how it would sit in a mix..... The bass got absolutely lost. I'm a bit concerned actually and decided to test the resistance of the pickups with my multimeter. Testing directly on the vol pots each pickup was at 4.4k at 20k ohms which seems VERY low. This may explain the low output that I experienced. I'm going to reach out to EBMM support to see if this was a flub or if the pickups are supposed to be low output like this.
I had the same experience with my Caprice and subsequently sold it.

It seems Music Man is going with another strategy entirely.

I know this is getting a "production run" - but even that will likely be limited and not pumped out in numbers like Stingray Specials are.

They seem to be opting for a strategy similar to fashion brands - offer a core lineup of products, but "drop" limited quantity offerings at a premium.

A couple of angles they've approached:
  • Darkray - Limited silver edition that sold out very quickly, but offered a standard black version going forward. Doesn't seem to be getting produced in huge numbers but is very sought after, seemingly.
  • Tim Commerford's 4 models - Sold out quickly, even at $3k straight from their site. No longer available for purchase, but some dealers still have stock here and there.
All of the limited run models have a live-updating ticker that shows how many are left, encouraging a FOMO purchase. Think what you want about it, but it's clearly working.
The TC long scale models are gone. I think the short scale passive may still be available.

Reached out to EBMM and I'll be sending er in for repair. They said the pickup spec should be 6-6.5k (which seems much more in line with the "60's jazz" inspiration they're going for) and what I describe seems abnormally low. I'll be shipping er out today and should have er back in a couple weeks.

It did sound a bit weak in your demo, Lobster. Being familiar with your videos, I knew it wasn't your rig or your fingers.
Hopefully you get it sorted!

I still don't understand why Fender hasn't reached out to Joe for a signature model. He definitely inspired a whole new breed of Jazz players.
Maybe they did and they couldn't work out a deal, who knows.
Imagine how many MIM Joe Dart Jazzes would be flying off the shelves now.
They should make a Squier Joe Dart Jazz with an onboard Vulf Compressor :)

He probably has an exclusive deal with EBMM

Nice of them to offer to fix it but, at this price point, you really shouldn't expect much quality control. ;)

Yeah I definitely noticed that I had to dig in quite a bit. I thought maybe my amp's speaker control was maybe low (it's independent of the signal that is recorded), and went with it. I may start breaking my multimeter out in future in depth videos.

Output on mine is a tad low as well. My practice amp is a 40w Fender Rumble. I normally keep the master volume 7:00 and had to bump it to 9:00 to match a standard jazz bass. @LowEndLobster - How significant was the volume difference on yours? I don't have a multimeter and would rather not buy one. Thanks.

A slim-bodied Jazz bass?
GL did it better. ;)

It was significant. It feels like output is almost halved compared to my other jazz basses.

I don't know that fender would entertain the design choices.

Will, his first signature bass is not a nice sounding bass. I am surprised that they built a second signature bass similar to the first crappy bass.

The tone of the first signature bass is not very present, so I am not surprised that the second signature is low output too!
I’ve heard Joe play the first bass live and it was punchy as hell.

They wouldn't. I meant a regular Jazz Bass with some customizations and mods for Joe, like a high mass bridge, Seymour Duncans and maybe better tuners to match his original MIM. Maybe that's why they went with Music Man.

Im not so sure - after all Fender have made what amounts to almost a Stingray copy for Flea.

However if you watch the videos regarding the original Joe Dart bass, it’s explained that they were seeking a top quality version of a cheap Stingray copy that Joe had used on some tracks (and he’s seen playing on videos), which is what was produced and Joe uses for Vulfpeck and other work. The Joe Dart 11 is a sort of natural parallel progression.

However his Jazz appeared to be a bog standard Mexican one - what would be the difference between a regular production one and one with Joe Dart on the headstock? My guess is Vulf we’re seeking something a bit more leftfield as a follow on to the original Joe Dart.

His Jazz has a badass bridge and Seymour Duncans.
Fender has made more than one signature model with barely any customizations anyway, like the Nate Mendel or the Phil Lynott P basses.
Anyway you're right. They wanted a high quality version of the old Carlo Robelli
