I walk into school today (the New School), and I find out that one of my teachers, the great pianist John Hicks died of internal bleeding this morning. He was something else - and a joy to be around too! My latest composition is now dedicated to him.

Double Bass JOHN HICKS RIP

I just saw him sunday at St. Marks church in Harlem. He was playing beautifully. Incidentally, St Mark's was his home church growing up, his father was the long time pastor. The saddest thing is that besides his trio, there was no one else in the place under 45 years old.
