Double Bass John Patitucci's Online Jazz Bass School

All registered users see the videos. The "video exchanges" are categorized by lesson type or subject. There's already 30 video exchanges ranging from beginner to advanced.
One thing I just realised is that videos are made public only after John has reviewed them and recorded his answer.
There are no certificates.

I just joined! ...And then I read this thread... Shoot, I would have used a referral if I had read here first.
I am at the very beginning of this upright journey. So I am finding the beginner lessons extremely helpful right from the start.
(My bass guitar instructor can also help me with in person lessons on the upright, but it's nice to have the online and video exchange lessons to work on in between the weekly lessons!)
Something I really appreciate is that I can use the site and watch the videos from my iPad/iPhone as well as from my laptop. That makes it about 10 thousand times more useful for me than something limited to a laptop or desktop or TV set (such as DVD type lessons).
Anyway... Feedback from a brand new player and a new user of the Jazz School... So far I really like it!

I know people have been asking if the school was open to electric bassists. It seems the answer is yes and no.
Today there were two new video exchanges submitted by students with electrics basses. One plays a 5 strings and one plays a 4 strings semi-holow.
I'm paraphrasing here but John basically says the following in his video responses:
- An electric bass guitar jazz course is a future project he would like to do. But it's a long way coming because the acoustic bass curriculum tooks many months to plan.
- In order to preserve the integrity of what they are trying to offer on the site, John is giving feedback using his acoustic bass for demonstrations.
He then gives advices on getting an upright tone on a bass guitar. The first great electric players like Jamerson started on acoustic; learning both instruments is beneficial and allows for cross-polinisation of knowledge. He also suggests players and recording to listen to and try to emulate their sound and feel (Ron Carter, Ray Brown, etc.) because that is how he himself got started playing jazz on the electric bass guitar.
John also says that he's been running late on video exchanges and explains that his video answer is coming from his hotel room in Boston. He's just started with his position at Berklee.
Oh, and these video answers were done past 1am !

You upload videos only if and when you want to. There is a student page in which you can fill information about you, if you want to. There is also a forum, which you can use or not.
Among the enrolled students, many seem to be only viewing the videos. And to be quite honest, the videos are really, really well done and cover a wide range of subjects.
So in summary, you take what you want to take from it.
I just joined and have been watching the student submissions and John's responses.
It seems like real wealth of information and John seems like a really good teacher.
These lessons would be cool to look at with your bass teacher. Kinda seems like a really great jazz bass book come to life. I don't know if non-realtime responses would be even half as good as Skype. Isn't keeping an appointment with a teacher half of what taking lessons is all about? At least at the beginner and intermediate levels.
I just watched some free videos,and I think this is a great supplement to private lessons.

I joined about a month ago and got a video to John in a week. It took about two weeks for the response. He had some good comments but I wanted to get a video in quick so I didn't actually do any lessons.
There's nearly 200 lessons just in the beginning section alone. I've been getting great practice in doing the scales and arpeggios. Unfortunately he doesn't give the fingering in the pdf charts so you need to watch him and write them down if necessary.
I just watched him play the Ab and Db Etudes and it was beautiful . I wish I could have a recording of his playing on these etudes.

I've been on the site for 3 months and still really like it. It's a very complete video curriculum that keeps growing with the video exchanges. I'm not about to run out of practice material, that's for sure.

2. how to practice
3. motivation and drive to keep at it
New video exchanges are answered to by John every 1 or 2 weeks.
For instance, 7 videos were added on the 21st and before that, 5 videos on the 11th.
