We were recently in L.A. and had a chance to get over to Burbank and visit with bruce. He was very gracious and gave us a tour of the shop and he even pulled out "Banjozilla" for me to try, it actually sounds pretty good. Bruce is putting together one of the original ampeg scroll reissue spec basses that steve azola had made for st. louis music as an anniversary project they wanted to do, I beleive it was steve who put them in touch with bruce. At any rate, steve sold me his spec scroll bass (sans hardware) it was never completed, and I subsequently contacted bruce about finishing it. Bruce pulled out several of the different series of scroll basses he has produced over the years and even an original ampeg AMUB. I,m going to have him remove the original fretted fingerboard and replace it with a fretless one, somehow these just seem "right" being fretless. I,m hoping to see mine sometime this year as its already been there a year already. I realize things move slow being a one man operation but I,m keeping my fingers crossed, cant wait to get it back.
