As a matter of fact, I was thinking about doing a kanji scroll down the bass side. See attachments - #1 means "passion" and #2 is "love." The only problem is that japanese text (or ANY Asian text for that matter) is just too complex.

What kind? Just your standard, no-frills ebony bridge -- Kinda like a Rob Allen, I suppose.

  • Claro walnut body core
  • Wenge accent
  • Flamed maple or eucalyptus burl top?
  • Don't hide the claro! It is, IMO, a lot prettier and more exclusive than the 'every-bass' flame and burl. And now I will be flamed for saying so...:)
    ...
I'd like to have ebony stringers in the neck, but that's too expensive. If I dyed the wenge black, would if affect the glue holding the laminates together?
Wenge is very dark, too. The effect will be enough without dying.
I saw sombody advising not to use wooden nuts. I see no reason not to, since I have had several wood nut instruments. One of them has lost a splint by the treble string, but not down to the bottom, so it works well.

It's a pity I can't get your oics to work...gotta find teh fault.

Claro is my favorite wood (plus, it's from my homestate :D ), but I want contrast between the ebony fingerboard and knobs, and the body -- that's why I'm sticking on a maple top. The back, however, will be totally nude.

And here are links to the pictures. You'll have to excuse the pictures quality.

The only difference between the two is the F-hole.

UPDATE: The storage unit doesn't have any electrical outlets, which isn't good because now I don't have a place to work, unless I want to potentially make enemies with the neighbors. The unit does have a light, though, and I've seen adapters that turn light sockets into electrical outlets. I may get one of those and try it out.

I used to use a storage facility as a practice place. We had the same issue, except the one we rented had no lights. There has to be outlets somewhere in the complex..possibly outside. I had to plug in to one of the outlets that was in the hallway of one of the indoor storage places. We used about 300 ft of that industrial electrical cord.

Be careful about the light fixtures. Sometimes the actual fixture itself is rated for a 75 watt bulb, so if you're pulling more power than that, you run the risk of starting a fire.

I placed the order with Larry the other day. Claro walnut wings with a flamed maple/wenge/claro/wenge/flamed maple center block to make it look like a neck-thru, AAA flamed maple top, and a flamed maple/wenge/claro/wenge/flamed maple neck blank.

In other news, while I'm waiting for the wood, I thought I'd start buying the hardware and stuff. One problem though -- the hardware on the back of the body will be gold, to match the walnut, but I'm using an ebony fingerboard and knobs to match the maple on the front. The tuning keys, while mounted on the back of the neck will be visible from the front, so I can't decide on gold (to match the back hardware) or black (to match the front).

I've seen dual colored tuners from hipshot (I think on Pete Skjold's site)

Maybe you could ask for a quote. Then again, maybe your budget isn't that unlimited :hmm:

Still no major progress. I haven't found a place to work, but in the meantime, I've been replinishing my parts bin. I bought a bunch of strap buttons and jacks yesterday.

Actually, I do have a more-or-less substancial update... I'm rethinking my choice of woods. I may do a walnut body and top with a maple accent, but like I said, I've got until Larry gets back from Vegas to think about it, so I'm in no rush.

Don't hold your breath on the working in the storage space thing- most won't let you, due to something called "liability". And most managers will hear your power tools screaming in the metal canyons...

A friend of mine used to have a stained-glass shop over by the "Whistle Stop" tavern off of Crown Valley. When his house burnt, he moved himself and his family in there. He knew the owner, and it was fully plumbed and wired. He also didn't plan on making it permanent, but he had some good jams in there, and he also had floor-to-ceiling windows on one wall. He was a bass player too...

Perhaps you could find an inexpensive place in an industrial park? One that could double as your storage and your workshop? Sell a few basses, and it could soon be self-sustaining! :)

BTW, I really like that design- very clean, and simple, but different. Good job!

My mom has a boyfriend, with a house, who's out-of town right now. He's expressed an interest in my quasi-luthiery hobby, so I've thought about setting up my Workmate in his backyard and working there. Unfortunately, he and my mom are not speaking to eachother right now, so it's probably not a good time for me to ask if I can use his backyard and electricity.

EDIT: Actually, my boss DID say that I could use his 2nd garage to work, but then he fired me, so I'm not sure if that offer is still valid.

Why not? It would prove that you are accepting of him even when he and your mom are fighting, thus proving your maturity...and offer to bring beer with you when you come over, the electricity cost would be minor, as you only turn on your machinery for short periods- enough to make the cut.

Well, I do have a couple of hottie female friends, but I'd never use them like that. :smug: In fact, I'm going with two of them, tomorrow, to the art museum in Birmingham, where there is a Woodcraft, which I will be stopping by to check out some wood. I'd like to get some walnut (tops and bodies), burl maple (tops), hard maple (necks), and MAYBE some Spanish cedar. I've seen several basses made with this, and cost permitting, I'd like to try it out.
