Hehe. Actually I *do* prefer the sound of the DB680/DB728, but often opt for the convenience of the DB750... which sounds close enough for rock'n'roll. Actually you're prolly in a "Trace Elliot" mood today so here... one you've seen before, but what can one do?

I think I can answer this question a bit better now than I did in my EL Whappo review, having had some time to live with the cabinet. I'm game to give it another shot.
The DB680/DB728 combination has great flexibility via the preamp semi-parametric mids, shelving type bass and treble and the +/++ boosts. The overall sound is vintage SVT through and through. Nice and deep with just the right amount of throaty mid-growl, although still has a wonderful buttery warm quality that is smooth and articulate. This combination cuts through anything!
As I've mentioned, I bought the Trace V8 as a poor man's answer to the Aguilar gear above. Soundwise it is quite different, although perhaps much can be attributed to the KT-88s versus the 6550s in the Aguilar. The low end is both thick and fat without being overbearing. In terms of overall sound the Trace purrs or roars (if you crank it) beautifully. It's awe-inspiring. Also the V8 has a distortion channel and a truly wonderful tube limiter.
I would be really torn if I had to choose just one or the other. I'm just glad I don't have to face that decision.

So, can I generalize your comments to say that the Trace is more growly, thick, and wooly, and the Aggie is more smooth and articulate?
Aggie is absolutely deep, smooth and articulate with the right amount of growl if pushed. I don't know that I would go as far as to say that the V8 gets wooly... thick and fat with the right amount of grunt would be right on the mark.tombowlus said:
