TL : DR - I'm curious what size jointer those of you with one are using, and specifically what you are using it for.
Here's my thoughts -
Would a 4" jointer be enough? It seems that the main thing you'd use a jointer for is jointing (go figure) long narrow boards for gluing neck laminates, or for jointing the "sides" of a body wing for gluing to a neck-thru section. In those cases, you're jointing "end grain" (I think? Or is it side grain, is side grain a thing? ) and not the "top. For things like a top, it seems you'd be better suited to drum sand or router plane something that wide because my experience (however limited) has been that a thickness planer or jointer that wide will cause too much tearout. I could be wrong.
My reasoning here is that this goofy ShopSmith I ended up with, they make a 4" jointer that goes on it and I may or may not have a line on one for what may or may not fit my budget.
Thoughts?!?!? Go.....

Plus, the big shop at the boss's house has a 6" freestanding jointer (the one that took his finger. note to self, never remove the guard). I still think that even given the new equipment I now have, I'll probably still go to his shop to do big tasks and use his big cabinet table saw, the thickness planer, the drum sander (once I get it back operational) and maybe even the finger remover (
