yes, I cut my control covers out before I put the top cap on with a scroll saw. My scroll saw is a cheapo I got at a tag sale. I keep looking for a used one that uses pinless blades, I have to drill a bigger starter hole to get the pinned blade through.
For inlays I use a jeweler's saw, it looks kind of like a coping saw, but it has super fine blades and really good control.

If nothing else you can get practice with refurbishing and flip it for a small profit in the future.
