Journey-Send Her My Love - harmonics?

I've joined a Journey tribute band and have been working thru learning all the songs.

Question- on the song 'Send Her My Love' at the beginning, there are harmonics off the C and E notes being played. I cant tell if they're being done by the bassist or the guitarist. If its the bassist, does anyone have any thoughts on how to get that same sound while playing this song?

I have the song itself worked out, just not the harmonics at the beginning of the song. Help??


lol, and yea I can sing. We are actually blessed with 3 guys in the band who can sing, so our harmonies are going to be very nice to the mix.

I dont have my bass in front of me but it sounds like all 5-7 fret harmonics on the D & G strings while playing the root at the same time. I play like this alot (harmonics playing a melody while playing the root note)

Even if thats true that its a guitar, and Im not sure it is, you would need two guitards while all the bass is doing is playing whole root notes. Easy to do on the bass, Im just at work or I would figure it out. :bassist:

I could be wrong but the one part sounds like he is playing the open E while playing the harmonics in succession: 5th fret then 7th then 5th on the D string, then 5th fret on the G string. Again, just ear-balling-it lol

Yup. There's a lot more going on in Journey's songs than a lot of people realize and vocals are just the half of it. They're a band that's reasonably easy to cover half-assed (and I've seen many bands do it, believe me), but takes a hell of a lot of work if you really want to nail it.

Good luck finding a [male] singer that can channel Steve Perry, too.

Thanks guys....I'm the newbie in the band. This band has been around the North Carolina area for a few years and the singer really can nail it. I'm excited to be a part of it...and working hard to nail every single part that I contribute!

In the section, the bass is alternating between C and E notes. If I'm reading you correctly, you're saying after the E I play the harmonics you stated above. But would is played after the C is played?

Thanks again guys...TB is such a wealth of knowledge!

Let me grab my bass tonight after the Mrs and kids go to bed and see if I can work it out for you. If I can get a handle on it Ill PM you.
