Joyo Tuner IS a Korg Pitchblack less $30

I'm all for copying designs for DIY (which I do a lot of) and I find it hard to pay for most things that I can build myself but I will support a business trying to make money on their own design (no matter how old) and will not champion someone whose business model is to clone and undercut.

If a company copies with the goal to innovate I'll give them a shot.

how do you feel about the companies that sell the DIY clone 'kits'? Wouldn't they also be profiting on someone else's R+D?

I see what you're getting at but to me kits occupy a different space than people selling clones. Kits are for electronics/music enthusiasts. There is a very big and supportive DIY community that fosters innovation and frowns upon copying just for profits.

Innovation comes from copying the progress of others and making your own changes. Only the asian makers be called on the floor for this. Why not all of the boutique vendors that have done the same thing, made a change or two to a Boss design, or an MXR design, and marketed is as their own pedal? Is okay as long as you building them by hand? Or in America?

I think there's a lot of validity to what you're saying here. I'm not necessarily advocating stealing other's designs or trying to push into a market with a "me too" attitude, but many of the boutique pedals out there are simply variations on classic technology with some tweaking done by the smaller company.

For instance, checking out this guy's demos of effect pedals is a great example: gearmanndude - YouTube

He demos a lot of boutique fuzz pedals for guitars. Guess what? Big surpirse! Most of them are just deriatives of Muffs and Tonebenders.

For what it's worth, my father has a Joyo headstock tuner that seems pretty decent, and their stomp boxes seem to have a fair amount of respect in the guitar and bass community.

The thing about Joyo vs. Harley Benton is a misunderstanding. The parent company that makes the pedals is Elder Audio Manufactory, and their products are stamped with many different brand names depending on the importer. Thomann of Germany imports gear and has it branded Harley Benton. Others get the labels Joyo, GLX, Beta Aivin, and many more. This is a normal Asian wholesale manufacturing deal, not a scam. Different from the Freekish Blues thing of making false claims.

Yes, I'm realizing that they are built for different markets....and I have no problems with that other than having to pay $80+ for a Korg Tuner when I could have bought the Joyo for $58 (actually it's only $30 on one web page) for the exact same tuner, especially when you have to include shipping too.....but I would prefer buying from the originator of the pedal itself
....I'm also NOT accusing Joyo of anything like copying, etc

lol. this is a troll post right? you're not.... serious are you?

No....I'm not a troll......I just bought a Korg Pitchblack tuner for $80 + shipping and then found this Joyo tuner by accident a couple of days ago and it's exactly the same as the Korg (with Joyo on it instead) and it's $30 with free shipping......I'm keeping the Korg, no point sending it back now but I'm a little upset for spending $40+ when I didn't have to since I'm on a pension.....

Anyway, I didn't realize this was such a "hot" topic......I'm sorry I brought it up again though I haven't come across it yet on TB but then I haven't read every thread.....
I have mostly all boutique pedals, custom basses and custom cabs and high end heads so it's not like I've been eyeing the cheapest but buying what I need.....a Korg Pitchblack or a Joyo Tuner are one and the same and I paid more than half what I should have.....I don't like people stealing ideas from others and then undercutting them.....but I haven't found all that much fairness in this world....it's seems to be the "meanest people end up on top" most of the time - not all the time - but.......
Anyway, I suppose it would be time to end this thread and wait for the next person to "open" their eyes and bring it up again......peace and out

Sousa, what about the mass production builders that continues to charge inflated prices on products that long since paid for their developments and product line changes, like Boss. Normally, the more of something you can make, the cost goes down, but Boss pedals only seem to get more expensive.

The simple answer is that the company exists to increase the wealth of its shareholders. As long as people will buy the units at the higher prices, the company's management is fulfilling its fiduciary responsibility to the owners of the company. They do not have a fiduciary responsibilty to you, the consumer.

Now, if the consumers would stop buying units because of the higher prices, it would be necessary for the company to either lower the prices, discontinue the line, or go out of business.

I could see that, if the kits are sold for cost or cost + shipping.....but those that are sold for 5 or 6 times the cost of the parts?
Or how about the guys who charge a service for putting together a clone kit for someone else?

I think these topics have far more grey area people like to ignore...the worst being any grey area that shows up in the mirror.... ;)

Fair enough. I'm no moral authority and as you pointed out there is a lot of grey area. But I'm not defending people who clone for profit. Electronic components don't clone pedals. People clone pedals and kit makers have a right to earn a profit because they are providing a service that while fun for most it also helps less scrupulous folks.

But, what does any of this have to do with korg and joyo?

I have been in need of a nice pedal type tuner and of course have not decided to buy one because of the prices but this looks like a good deal to me.It don't matter who makes it as long as i'm saving $$$$. About how long is the wait time in one this, shipping wise?
