Joyo Tuner IS a Korg Pitchblack less $30

Just found out that the Joyo Tuner JT-305 which sells for $58 IS a Korg Pitchblack which sells for $80-$90.....

SO

The Korg tuner is a rebadged Joyo tuner and sold for more $.......

I just got a Korg Pitchblack tuner less than 1 week ago, no point mailing it back to the ebay seller since it would cost me that much for shipping but I wish I'd known this 3 weeks ago when I bought it....I could have saved $30 or so.........

Also found out that the OCD pedal is also a rebadged Joyo Ultimate Drive pedal selling for much less.....some pedals are being sold in the UK under the name Harvey Benton, also at reduced prices...............some boutique pedals have also been Joyo pedals repainted and rebadged under different names and sold for 4 X's more $$......I think I'm going to get a few Joyo pedals and see what they're like

Incorrect. Joyo make a clone of the OCD. It is not the same pedal. And to suggest that some boutique pedals are repainted mass-produced, chinese pedals is ridiculous to the extreme. Fortunately you didn't mention any brand names or Talkbass could have been in big trouble... :rollno:

I believe the OCD has been around for far longer than Joyo.

As for the tuner, well, it is a tuner. There is no big mystery to a tuner. Big LED displays are all the rage. The GFS GFT-90 is similar, but different.

Actually, it is true. Freekish Blues got caught modding/gooping a Joyo Ultimate Drive and selling it as the Alpha Drive for 3x the Joyo. The part that got them in trouble is not the modding/relabeling, but their claim that they hand-made their pedals in Jersey.

It is a common practice to farm out this kind of pedal production. HCFX recently outed another company, in Sweden I think, that wasn't evening modding, just repainting and claiming hand-made and charging for it.

Joyo is the one doing copies. Try to support the original makers if possible.

I was just being snarky, sorry. :D

In general, I agree about supporting the originator brands when possible, but I also know that justifying that kind of cash takes time for some people, especially if the budget is limited. It's like buying a Hyundai Genesis, instead of a Ford Mustang. The Genesis is a good car, but not the Mustang challenger that Hyundai has heralded it to be.

The thing about Joyo vs. Harley Benton is a misunderstanding. The parent company that makes the pedals is Elder Audio Manufactory, and their products are stamped with many different brand names depending on the importer. Thomann of Germany imports gear and has it branded Harley Benton. Others get the labels Joyo, GLX, Beta Aivin, and many more. This is a normal Asian wholesale manufacturing deal, not a scam. Different from the Freekish Blues thing of making false claims.

Yea but do any of these pedal makers have patents on their devices? I mean aren't most of them rehashed ideas that are open market anyway? I mean, it's not really stealing intellectual property. It's making the same pedal for cheaper, but not technically stealing. At least IMO. It's shady for sure though. I wouldn't buy them because they look like cheap crap to me.

How many people have compressor derived from a Ross? Or a dirt pedal based on the TubeScreamer? Or a fuzz derived from the Muff?

All of them are copies of someone else's ideas and designs. The difference I am seeing as I have followed the arguments the last few years is WHO is making the copy. It seems that if it is an Asian assembly line, it is evil. Everyone else is excused for just being "inspired".

Ultimately, there are only so many ways to do each effect in an effective manner. If you get too crazy with the circuit, you end making something that looks like EHX would market it.

Why is it that every time an effect pedal/unit clone thread starts, it becomes a moral minefield or whether it's ethical to buy a copy of another brand's product.

But when it comes to bass guitars themselves, everyone seems happy with the likes of Rondo/SX basses being cheap copies and suddenly toss their morals out of the window?

Personally I couldn't care less where it comes from. If another company can make me a product of the same quality, that sounds the same as brand X for much less money, then that tells me that brand X is charging me for the name on the box.

PS, one of my bands guitarists has just got a Joyo OD pedal that sounds fab. He's not by any means struggling with money, but he wouldn't have justified the cost of the original brand it's copied from.

nope. not true. if someone comes up with a circuit or a tweak on a circuit and somebody else steals it and sells it if you buy from the original builder you're paying FOR THEIR TIME FIGURING OUT THE CIRCUIT. R & D costs a lot, and is a proportionally larger investment for smaller companies.
