i think the "enough strings" question will be answered, though, when there is an 16 string bass tuned E A D G B E A D G B E A D G B E, that way you can play it basically like a piano, only you will need two other people to help you hold and play the bass

When I received my wenge neck from the luthier who made it, even though they warned me that it'll be heavy, I was still shocked how heavy it was! The neck alone weighted more than my entire ABG, or even my ABG and hollowbody guitar combined! And that was just a 6-er neck...

... I can't even dare imagine how heavy this will be...


I'll take a guess of about 8-9 kgs... maybe 7 if this piece of butternut is a lighter one...

this bass will be something like 6kgs I think. That's what I am aiming for at least.

My 5-6 string basses are usually 3.8 to 4.2kgs

Well, with so much wenge, a bigger body to accomodate the wide neck and so many strings, it will be on the heavy side of 6 kgs or so I guess...

Well, they seem to me poorly placed -- the gaps between them, the positions (especially those on top/left side).
But i'm no expert.

The placements look a little weird to me too (the last tuner on the bass side especially), but that is just a piece of paper with holes cut in it... possibly with scissors... which is not going to really have the same accuracy as a drill press, or whatever method JP uses to drill the tuner holes.

Absolutely Geoff, it seems to me that some things here are just placed to show what will look the bass finished....Just give them 1 or 2 months, and it will be different....

It's a legitimate question... one that I was thinking when I first saw it, but didn't post. The answer could be as simple as "it's a piece of paper I cut-out to give an idea of what it would look like with the headstock."

the tuners are actually well spaced and placed on the mdf template. the paper template (CAD drawing) sticked to the template to cut it got teared up when drilling so this is the weird thing you guys see (paper shadow)

thanks guys. I'm pretty sure it's 29 frets. We are shooting for C# - Ab tuning, if the .006 gives us problems we'll go for a C - G tuning. The claw is almost done.

this bass really looks great,and when it comes to this amount of strings,each player has their own specific reasons as to why their bass is configured the way it is, i.e. 29 frets,34-29" fan etc..

I remember reading your post, Jean, that Ken Lawrence had assured you that an .009 or a .007 string would tune up to Ab4 at the 30 inch scale.You mentioned the tuning would be F#0-Ab4,but it changed to C#0-Eb4. That C#0 string is great, but why the change?

I was wondering how the .006 wire was working for tuning up to Ab4 at 29" or are you going with the G4 ? Did the .006 give you problems?
I prefer the C-G tuning on my 12.
Either way, that's quite an accomplishment,congratulations on a beautiful bass!
