I owned 2 M9s just before I bought Monique.

I am not getting into the quality issues I had with both my M9s here, but a year later with Monique.... I don't miss Mesa. The M9 IMO is the best sounding amp Mesa has made, but to me, Monique sounds better.

The M9 is tight, fast and generally modern.... I can get most of that as well as more vintage tones out of Monique.

I bet you will be really happy with the Monique tone.

Thank you Mr. Skies. I do understand that we all do this gladly for the love of it. 'Cause nobody could pay us enough for the time and energy we put into it.

The nice comments from the crowd and crew at different gigs is always gratifying, as is the fact that our 3 shows last week have already netted us 3 more shows in the next month. Paying the band rent and saving some money for recording is a good thing.

On another note, I have a player in Finland trying to make his Crown XLS 2500 watt amp work and he is having difficulty. His other amps, including a very nice EBS Reidmar work well.

Even though the specifications for the Crown XLS say it operates at 1.4V RMS, and Monique (he has the Push/Pull Line Out) puts out way more than that, he is not getting more than 50% of the volume.

Anybody else out there using this Crown? DId he and I miss something?

Yup, I'm on the XLS train, running a 1000. I'm plugged in and using the line out pulled, as suggested for a 1.4. I run the power amp at full volume and adjust the Mo output to my needs. I'll say I haven't had a chance to drive the rig hard at band volume yet, so I'm not sure what it is capable of doing. Through my Mesa PH115 @ 8ohms, I've got the output at about 9 o'clock or lower for jamming with the stereo in my living room.

I don't have another pre to compare/contrast with the Crown... though, I could probably run my Darkglass 7 as a pre into the Crown and see how different the output is.



On another note, I noticed an interesting bit of noise recently. I've got my Mo going into my Crown via 1/4", and I run the XLR into my M-Box. Ususally the M-Box and related software isn't on when I run the Crown/cab, or vice versa. Each signal routing is dead silent. However, I recently fired up Logic while I had the Crown/cab running and as soon as the program opened, I got a high frequency hum through the cab (I think, though it could have been my playback speakers; they are close to each other). Any thoughts on what is going on here?

Hello folks! I'm the "friend from Finland" struggling with the Crown XLS...

I actually started a thread myself too on this topic, titled "Crown XLS // Monique issue", but I noticed that Jule is again doing his wonderful customer service and have reached to you guys!

This is what I posted in the first place:

I've bumped into a problem that I can't solve, since I'm quite an ignorant as far as the electricity is concerned... So please be "gentle" towards me, I'm quite simpleton on this subject!

My current rig is Jule's Amps Monique-preamp and Crown XLS 2500-poweramp, and I'm using Barefaced Big Baby T -cabinets.

For some reason It's impossible to get the volume level loud enough, even though the poweramp is 2500 wats, which is insanely powerful on the paper... Anyway, I have to ALWAYS, even in moderate stage levels, turn the preamp level and poweramp output level both completely full, and still I can't reach the amount of volume I'd need. I had this same problem also with Ampeg SVP 3-Pro preamp which I used before Monique.

At first I thought that maybe the Barefaced cabs are just extremely power-hungry equipment. But then I borrowed my neighbour's EBS Reidmar head, which is "only" 250W. BOOM, it went insanely loud, and I had the gain turned on 50% and output volume 20%. I have never reached that amount of volume with my Crown XLS 2500, and there were still a loooong way to go as far as the output volume level was concerned!

I also attached my Monique to Reidmar, and almost blew out the ceiling. It went extremely loud.

Then I tried my Monique/Crown rack with another cab, namely Aguilar db112. The same problem: I needed to crank the volume up to the maximum again, and I still sounded like Mickey Mouse...

So the conclusion is that there's something wrong with my poweramp. I just have no idea what it might be, it should be functioning properly... Do you have any ideas what can be possibly, some kind of "electric miss-fit"?

As far as the specs go, the preamp has a extra feature that one can increase the preamp's voltage output: one is able to get a 4db increase in both the Line Level and the Balanced XLR outputs. That gives up to (+4db 1.25Volts) from the Line Out and (-10db .775Volts) from the Balanced XLR output. But the Crown XLS 2500 power amp requires 1.4Volts RMS to go to full volume, so I'm just wondering are either of those "strong enough"...

I asked this same question form Jule and Alex (Barefaced developer), and though I don't question their expertise, I just thought I might ask here as well, if someone has had similar problems with Crown XLS poweramps.

So anyone, any ideas how to solve the problem?

Please, help a dumb in a trouble!!

I am running an older Monique Dove Cage (no push/pull) with a Crown XLS2000 and it seems to work great. I use it for lower level rehearsal/studio use though. I Have done a few small gigs with the pair and had no volume issues when paired with 2 Berg AE210 cabs.

I have a racked Monique (with push/pull) with a Crest ProLite 2.0 for gigs and I love the Crest. Great product for around $350. I would recommend it over the more expensive, heavier and more complicated Crown. I don't use the DSP ever as it is a confusing P.I.T.A. for my little brain to figure out.

Wondering if I should pair the Crown and the rack Monique as it has the push/pull. Not sure if that will buy me anything though.....

My crown volume changes pretty significantly with the pull on the output. Without it, my tone sucks. I'd never run it that way.

are you running in bridged mono? You're doing the following from the manual? Are you running Speak-On connectors? Have you made sure to use 1+ and 2+ (instead of the normal 1+, 1-)?

Bridge-Mono Mode
Bridge-Mono Mode delivers the power of both amp channels into a single 8 or
4 ohm load.
Before you get started ensure that you:
1. Connect signal source to Channel 1 only using either the XLR, ¼ Inch, or
RCA connectors.
2. Connect the speaker as shown.
a. If using the binding post outputs, connect the positive terminal of the
speaker to the positive terminal of Channel 1 and the negative terminal of
the speaker to the positive terminal of Channel 2.
b. If using a Speakon® connector, connect the positive terminal of the speaker to 1+ and the negative terminal to 2+.
Plug the connector into the Channel 1 output only.
Follow these quick steps to confi gure the amplifi er for “Bridge Mode”:
1. Hold the &#8220;Mode/Menu&#8221; button down for 3 sec until the LCD screen displays &#8220;Amp Mode <More>&#8221;.
2. Press the &#8220;Mode/Menu&#8221; button to begin confi guring the Amp Mode.
3. Press the &#8220;Next&#8221; button until the LCD screen reads &#8220;Mode: Bridge&#8221;.
4. Press the &#8220;Mode/Menu&#8221; button to confi rm your selection.
5. Now press the &#8220;Next&#8221; button until the LCD screen displays &#8220;Bypass&#8221;. Press the &#8220;Mode/Menu&#8221; button to confi rm your selection. The LCD screen should now read

I had to post this because everytime I see this it makes me laugh. Many of my customers tell me how good the Monique sounds with their Skjold bass, well my sister's name is Monique Just one of those funny things that gets ya thinking. I guess I have to look into one
