Jule Amps Monique part 4

Triads, chords, octaves, arpeggios, etc. work great for me and I tend to leave the Sensitivity at 3:00.....

Over a year with Monique and haven't looked at another amp since.

I thought the Darkglass and fEARful fanboys were over the top.... I am likely worse with the Monique love.:p Such a great product.

I shook some walls last night. We did a benefit for the local 'peace' organization, and the band before us was a nice 6 piece folky thing with lots of overt 'message' songs and the bassist had a very small Ampeg combo. Much of the crowd for them was a seated 50-70 academic progressive crowd. Then we got up. And the whole night changed lol. :D The 21-40 age group moved in and actually all danced. As usual, my full rig (un-mic'ed, no di) and I could see out the 'front' windows of the club people dancing 30 yards across the street. After two gigs with provided backline, it was nice to have my own stuff running.

I played a travel gig recently with a supplied super ancient and beat up Fender rumble combo.

I am not a whiny gear snob at all, but man I was a whiny little beatch having to play thru that crappy amp. We only did 5-6 songs (U2, Queen, BTO, etc.) and a bunch of interstitials, but it was in front of almost 1000 people (corporate gig) and I sounded terrible on stage. Luckily the DI feed sounded awesome. If I didn't fly, I would have brought Monique. Actually, next time I may ship the damned thing!:hyper:

45 minutes or less I can get through with most anything I can actually hear. I may not love the tone, but I do need to be able to hear myself at a certain level. I may not love what I'm hearing, but I smile just as much as when I have my 'chosen'...

I also want to post concerning the use of my fdeck Series 3 HPF.

My findings are exactly the same as BurningSkies. I used all new cables, both TRS and TS, between the pre and power and in front of the pre.

Results were exactly the same as BurningSkies. I am using the Crest ProLite 2.0 power amp, and my fdeck was purchased around early November of last year.

Currently, I have the fdeck in front of Monique. It is working great in this location of the signal chain.

I just don't feel comfortable with the difference in gain with it in between the pre and power.

No big deal, I justed to post it in case anyone else come across this setup and experiences the same thing.

Funny this should come up now. I'm doing a gig now in Philly at the Crystal Tea Room and my sound guy got a little annoyed with me. He said when I thump on the strings his speaker cones are shaking immensely. Monique puts out a wicked thump. Now I am using an fdeck series 3 but I was using it between Monique and my power amp. So my sound guy was not benefiting from the fdeck because the DI was obviously before it. So this last set I switched it. I put the fdeck in front of Monique to see if that would help.

When I did this I observed a few things. I had to increase the line output on the Monique to about 4pm this way when I used to have it about 3pm. But I did notice a difference in sound too. It seems to have a bit more roundness to the notes and the mids are thicker with more punch if that is even possible! The tone actually reminds me of my Read pre a bit, but much fuller and thicker. I'm still getting a great thump out of it too. I guess sometimes a problem becomes a blessing in disguise. I guess the impedance match is better in front of the Monique than after. Or I guess I just prefer the tone to my ears before Monique. Who knows?? And to think all this time I used it after and it took a problem with my sound guy to make a change. Lol!

Btw, I'm still not sure if it made a difference for my sound guy, but that's his problem now! I'm digging the feel now way too much to change! :)

But fundamentally that's his problem to deal with. Think of all the different signals from all the different bass heads he has to tweak. There are bass drum mics. Suddenly the Monique makes his speakers jump. Does it do it to your rig without the fDeck? I play an Ashbory which has outrageous fundamental and no sound guy has said a thing. In fact I've reported they smile.

This being text I must say there is no snarky in my tone.:):)

Yes, I am running my Series 3 in front of Monique now. I like it there. The line level is much different when the HPF is between the pre and power.
It makes sense that the sound guy would not benefit with the HPF being after Monnique.

Lol! My speakers definitely move without the fdeck for sure. Don't get me wrong,my sound guy loves the tone of Monique, but I seem to send him for a loop when I thump on my bass! Like like the scene from the little rascals when the audio engineer is recording them and his hair goes flying up. Perhaps some of you to young to know who the little rascals are!

Spanky needs to learn where the HPF is on the channel strips...;)

I ran my HPF3 in between my Monique and my IPR for about a year with the associated unexpected 'signal gain bonus'. In that time I never felt it was dangerous or hazardous.

I used it there primarily to protect my speakers and obviously for the 'room benefits' it provides. I was worried that any errant tube grumbles, crackles, static would potentially damage my speakers, running the IPR bridged at ~3Kw. I also had concern because the Monique does have a wide low shelving bass control (centered ~53hz I believe), and since I boost my lows, I reach pretty low and was seeing some fairly major speaker excursion that didn't seem beneficial to my tone. I also play a bass with a 37" scale length, so I also probably have more fundamental and content down low than many bass players.

Beyond the excursion and transient protection, I also found that since the Monique can push so low, I was engaging the DDT protection on my amp. I did not experience that with my previous 'main' preamp, the Kern IP-777 with similar tone and output settings. Putting the FDeck HPF3 in between the units cleared that up entirely even WITH the impedance mojo we're discussing.

I ended up removing it from between the units and putting it in front of my Monique input for several reasons, one being that the Monique CAN exceed the headroom that the HPF3 has, and can cause some raunchy breakup. I eventually felt that I didn't need to jockey what in my mind is yet another 'gain stage' to keep my sound clean. I already have about 4, with my onboard bass preamp, the Monique Sensitivity control, the Monique output and the power amp.

I agree. I think it just sounds better out front. After a year of one way, when I moved it, I discerned an improvement of my tone. It may be from running the main out on the Monique full up or nearly so. I don't know why and can't quite describe it...just more better. :atoz:

I agree with this and what Chadds says. One of the reasons I liked having the HPF3 in between Pre/Power was that it gave the soundman unaltered signal from my bass/amp out of the DI. I'd rather provide as 'full' a signal as possible to someone behind the board, then they can decide what they need to do with it. I know some soundmen who DO want to push the subs pretty hard, and I don't want to 'cheat' them of the chance to make whatever mess in the FOH the want. ;) But really, they should have the tools to handle the tone sculpting they need. They should at barest minimum have a set of limiters and/or a high pass for PA speaker and amp protection.

I noticed that running the main line out almost full on that the sound improved also.

Burning skies , I was running my fdeck after Monique for the same reason. I wanted to be able to give my sound guy my full signal. But I agree since I moved it last night, I think it sounds much better in front of Monique. Just a side note, I generally leave the eq flat when running Monique and have the sensitivity about 9oclock.

My sound guy is very good and has all the necessary tools. He is using a Behringer x32 digital console. I think what happened last night took him by surprise and freaked him out a bit. I guess he never noticed it before.I did mention to him about engaging the hpf on my channel but he said he'll work it out... Which is good cause I'm not changing a damn thing! :)

Yeah, for me personally, having the HPF in front of Monique just simplifies it. One less thing to deal with.

I do use the HPF to clean things up a little, but also for speaker protection. With that said, I don't run super low with my tone. I never see a lot of speaker movement with my cabs, but having the fdeck in line makes me feel better. Plus it can quickly rid my tone of any weird junk at certain venues. I have noticed at the threatre where we have a regular gig, that some of the locations on the stage sound pretty bad and some are just sweet. The fdeck really helps in those situations.

I have also noticed that I prefer the Monique line level between 3:30 & 5:30. Recently, I have been setting it somewhere around 3:30 - 4:00 to start with and adjust the power amp accordingly. That still gives me some adjustment to play with and, to my tired old ears, sounds a little better.

Another thing I have observed: my Jazz basses sound killer with Monique! About a year ago, my wife gave me a Limited Edition American Standard P bass that I fell in love with. I have been playing that bass almost exclusively since last November, along with my '76 P. However, after getting Monique, I took on of my Jazz basses to rehearsal and it sounded great. I really can't explain it except to say it sounds so much fuller and driving. Oh and the Jazz loves that sensitivity cranked!

It has been so much fun playing with Monique!

Thanks Jule!!!

Goofing around on a riff tonight. A gothy little vibe. EQ flat, sensitivity at 4o'clock, plucking near the neck finger-style. Timing isn't great, but not bad for a recovering quadriplegic. The cut sounds H.U.G.E. through my NAD/B&W system, so I hope the web does it justice.

Huge here too. Thank you for sharing this.

doh! just realized my playback system had the bass boosted way up. doesn't sound as huge as i thought, but still pretty nice :p

today, i'm screwing around with my darkglass b7k and diamond comp in the chain. sweet. blend at 50%, thin setting, and drive at noon, getting just a touch of breakup at to top. very glassy sounding. with my P i usually need to boost the sensitivity (pulled at 3o'clock) but with the extra gain from the pedals, i'm pushing it in and rolling it back.

I had an fDeck but didn't really notice any difference and ended up selling it. Monique shouldn't be putting out sub harmonics (per Jule). I haven't had a complaint from any FOH guys, and my Baers don't complain at all. Maybe the instrument has an impact...

Hey Jule, you got some big props today at our festival gig. The main soundman LOVED the bass tone. When I went over after our set to thank him, he raved about how great 'my bass' sounds, and I know that much of that is YOUR territory. Also the tech who ran monitors and did the stage setup told me my 'rig' was the best he'd ever heard. Now, you're in good company with Dave Green and Sheldon Dingwall, but I know that Monique really makes all their work shine. I also got a bunch of feedback in the crowd from bassists and fans alike and they were enthusiastic about it too. :)

Thank you Mr. Skies. I do understand that we all do this gladly for the love of it. 'Cause nobody could pay us enough for the time and energy we put into it. :)
