Jule Amps Monique part 4

My signal chain is bass, pedals, fdeck hpf series3, into Monique. Line out of Monique into the fx return of the Puma 900. I use canare speaker cable (12 gauge) from my puma into my Baer ML112.

You may find as I do the Puma power section to be a little aggressive, but it works great. I also use Monique with a crest prolite which sounds bigger and better than the puma, but again the puma is more than sufficient. Someday I would love to get a Minnie, but I can't justify dropping that kind of coin on a power amp.

I wanted the dove cage, but got a great deal n the rack mount I have (thanks esa). I also felt the rack would be easier to rack for protection, and that I could match it with any power amp I wanted without having an awkward size difference. I think the SWR guys make a small footprint power amp, bit otherwise, it is the De. Of course, the nice thing about the rack is that you can get the De mounted inside it. Lastly, if I ever wanted to sell it (I'm a GAS-y guy) I thought the rack would be an easier item to ship.

Jule did mention something about the steel rack casing being more resistant to signal interferences than the dove or the aluminum of the tardis. Not sure how big an issue this has been for people, but I haven't read any complaints.

Here is my logic for ordering the De-Monique.

First, while I like my stuff to look good,(especially given the more 'high end' freelance work I do, 'look good' means not beat up. I could really care less about having a 'piece of art' on top of my cabinet. I hate pedals, I hate components. I want to take an amp out of the bag, plug it in and play, and I want to be out the venue after the gig as quickly as possible. So, if I can choose the 'all in one' and get the same performance, I'm there.

Second, I don't do any studio work at this point, so no need for a separate preamp (i.e., I would never use the preamp without the power amp).

Third, I am VERY happy with the total performance of my other heads (for different tonal profiles), and would never run another pre into an all in one head.

So, the De-Monique was a no brainer for me. Per my discussion a few pages ago, my only hesitation was to make sure I was not losing meaningful tonal variation or performance losing the additional 'master volume' on De-Monique versus the component version. After a number of discussions, I'm comfortable that it is a non-issue. My De-Monique should arrive at the end of November if all goes well (Jule said the 'Tardis' should be on the way to Demeter this week).

IMO to all of the above of course.... just my pure preference and 'logic'.

Edit: I will be carrying it (assuming I dig it and keep it) in a custom Mooradian soft bag. As I do with any lightweight head that doesn't have a decent bag option from the manufacturer, I will send them detailed measurements and the bag will arrive in about 2 weeks. Not cheap, but IMO the best soft bag you can get. I've been using them for decades, ever since I got my first one for my Walter Woods back in the day. The De-Monique is just on the edge of being too large to comfortably carry in a bag, but at 13 pounds, should be no problem.

Yes, but the delay in making it real is embarassing. It is a 40 watt all tube Bass Amp that is getting pretty darned close to making music. All that is required is time.

Somehow, and it happens with each piece of new gear, I forget how long it really takes to make an idea work. I expect to be ready for live feedback on the 40 watter in December.

Also working on a mostly fun experiment with a Class D 600 watt idea. It may never be for sale. I am curious to see what it really takes to to get where we want to be. I am grateful to David, who has kindly done the local testing so far. It takes courage to do live on-stage testing of prototypes stuffed into what is essentially a wooden shoe box. :)

I have some of the same goals as Ken - I play a lot of gigs, and want to get in/out as quickly as possible. With my current setup having the dove cage doesn't cost me much time or carry. I have a Mono Producer bag that carries Minnie and all my cables. The dove cage goes in its own bag (and I got the one with a compartment for the power cable and patch cable). Then have a Peak folding stand in a bag that also has a power strip. That all stacks on the ML112 which I roll in and out on the Remin Super 600 (thanks Ken :D).

I get a question or comment on Monique at most every gig. I absolutely love the aesthetic so while it may add 30 seconds to my setup, I'm willing to pay the price. After doing 100+ gigs a year the past few years, I've got load in/out down to a science.

Thanks Jule.

As for the form factor, the rack option was also nice for being able to leave everything plugged in for transport. My handicap makes set up annoying and lengthy. The fewer things I need to mess with, the better.

I chose the rack. While I gig regularly, I also carry my own gear and sometimes PA gear. It makes much more logistic sense for me to have a decent 4 space rack that I can know is secure in my car along with 2 cabs, my bass and my oversized gig bag. It 'fits' easier that way. Also, it saves a bit of time on the setup since I leave it wired up to my power amp and just have to run the speakons. Things also get more complex when I'm carrying PA gear, the car more crowded and more things stacked.

On stage, often in an opening or middle slot its easier for me to pull the connections in the back, clamp on the rack covers and get my stuff off stage ASAP. We are famous for having a FAST changeover time. We can get on stage and hit the first note in 15 minutes. We can get off stage in 10. To us that can also mean a 45 or 50 minute set becomes an hour plus.

For studio I just bring the rack and use the Monique for DI and don't even plug in the power amp.

Sounds cool. If you were further North I'd try to run down a better bass rig for you, although with that set-up you'll have a decent amount of volume and plenty of mids so at least you'll be able to hear yourself.

We have a good sound guy apparently, so it will be all good.

The bass may be a different story. A "Fender Jazz" is what I asked for specifically, so we shall see.:D

The weekend went well. Pete, Ruben, and I has a gas playing Pete's Skjold basses through your Monique's and Duke's Audiokinesis cabs. Pete is working on the informal video we made and I'll get it to ASAP .
