Jule Amps Monique part 4

Thanks for the help through PM's etc. when deciding on the purchase! So far, better than good!:bassist:

I'm thinking through my Mooradian bag spec now. Since there is that little mini baseball bat switch on the back of the amp (DI ground lift), I'm going to configure the bag so that the width is actually the top of the bag (i.e., so that when I set the bag down, it doesn't sit on that micro bat switch... so all switches/knobs will be on the side of the bag when transporting).

That should work OK. I guess I would suggest to Jule to possibly find a different solution for that switch for those of us who will be bagging this format. Minor issue though.

Just guessing though. Sounds great to me!

I heard the mids thru the Minnie as being a bit longer of an event/envelope than thru my CA-9. A bit more like the way a tube amp section might behave. More relaxed, but futher developed, or spread out, envelope wise, to better feature any mid-character there that your bass might have.

I can understand hearing nuances like this when listening to the recorded bass soloed through a DAW. But is this example audible in context of a loud band? Starting to sound esoteric - the description, that is! :)

As with Ken's(Kenneth's :>0) initial impressions of the De-Monique, I did not qualify my observations with venue translation ... just heard what I heard.
Most tube amps, IME, trade some attack (more relaxed) for re-upped overtones and a longer envelope/developement of the notes.
I hear some of that in the Minnie.

I like this idea. Maybe a rocker switch would be better. That way nothing would protrude from the back. The toggle switch you have is a three way, but only in the ground position does it put the ground on pin 1 of the XLR. The other two positions are the same - ungrounded. This switch is really only a must-have-feature when we can't eliminate Phantom Power from our balanced line. I do not recommend running un-grounded in normal situations.

Over the years I've learned that if I have to lift that ground to eliminate hums or other noise from the balanced line then there is some other evil thing lurking I need to know about and address.

The simple reality of that switch is that it is one of the few I've found with a very sturdy metal enclosure and hard plastic housing. I couldn't find the same robust quality in a two way when I ordered these. This makes it difficult to break compared to others I've had here in the shop.

Also, as to the lack of a fan on the Tardis De-Monique, James and I determined that it is not required. The custom (designed by James) heatsink atop the 800-D amplifier is now thermally in contact with the top of the Tardis. With all that metal (aluminum) sluffing off heat the fan became redundant. Cool in several ways. :cool:

Shipped my rack mount Monique out to its new owner Sat, he should be getting it today and I'm sure that he's excited. Waiting on the completion of my Bamboo unit to ship out. I never knew I could feel so alone without Monique in my life :bawl:

Hey Jule,

Cool on the fan. Excellent. Not surprising that the big box and aluminum etc. would work fine with the Minnie inside.

Cool on the switch also... was just curious why it was 3 way. I'll just 'ignore' the middle setting. I've only had to lift ground once in my almost 40 years of playing. Minor thing on the baseball bat thing also... just makes bagging a touch tricky, but not really.

WONDERFUL sounding and looking amp... thanks!

Have some fun. If anybody asks you at a gig about the middle position tell them it is the "magic" position. I certainly would. :)

And you have me looking at those F210's also... so there:p

The Monique is just a thing of beauty though. Just looking through the cooling slats and seeing those transformers, tubes, and real wire (much less the bird cage).... kind of makes it feel good to own it!

agreed. But to my ear (and I used to work for Aguilar), the AG doesn't come close to what the Monique can do, sonically. But of course, to each his own. I've just always been a tube guy over solid state.

And you're quite welcome :D, but just for the record, I had nothing to do with Jule getting together with James. That was already happening. I just expedited the process by ordering the first Minnie. I did mention to Jule years ago that if he just found the right class D amp to put inside Monique he'd have one of the best bass heads on the market, but he didn't seem interested at the time. After discussing design stuff with James I think he realized James was getting ready to sell an amazing class D amp to go along with HIS pres and there it was. When James asked me how I wanted it to look, I told him I only wanted the main power switch, light, silk-screened logo and master knob on the front, everything else on the back, and I wanted it to sit under the measurements of the Monique perfectly. This "forced" ;) Jule to send James an empty Monique chassis so he could fabricate it, and I had the pleasure of aesthetically designing the first Minnie 800, which is the one you get today. A small credit at best, but I'll take it! haha....since it took James FOREVER to build that first Minnie, Jule had already gone ahead and decided he could put the class D amp inside a bigger chassis with Monique, hence the Tardis and rackmount model. But, just like I knew it would be, it's a success!

Personally, I love everything about what Jule Amps is about, and fortunately, Jule's love and pride in his products are more than obvious by their quality. I've decided I ONLY want to use Jule's gear forever, as I've developed a relationship with Jule over the last few years and he really is the man. It's the kind of relationship every bassist wishes they could have with their amp companies. I'm super stoked to be the first to test out the very first tube powered Monique hopefully around New Year's time....or whenever Jule gets around to it and stops building all these damn Moniques! :)

You guys are killing me!!! I'm trying to off some gear so I can raise some funds to purchase a Sadowsky p/J 5 string as a backup to my Fodera. But I've always wanted to get the Minnie too! You guys are enablers! Lol!!!!
