Jule Amps Monique part 5

If you are going to do this, you may be better off getting a transformer isolated mic split from whirlwind.

Sort of what I was thinking...I've been experimenting with running two Preamps with the thought that I might record and double track it just for the heck of it and because I can't leave well enough alone. But then, I could just split the signal at my bass.

Are you getting the 3D feel with the G55? Or are you plugging straight in?

I've tried it with and without the G55. The 3D element is there with both. However, the straight plug in sounds slightly more ... refined ... through the cab. I preferred that tone over the wireless, noting that the latter wasn't bad in the least - just not quite as pristine. I tried the G55 with and without the simulated cable setting.

I'll test sonic quality of wired vs. wireless plus with and without the dual XLR adapter when I get a chance later via some recordings through the DI to my Zoom H6.

LOL! You're crazy like me. Your tone sounds so good on those recordings, yet you still keep trying for more! We are all certifiable here!

Good luck with the new rig UB! Pretty sweet! I hear what you're saying about the whole rack mount thing. If you're really happy with the tone, I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem selling the rack mount and getting a Tardis demonique.

As for the wired/wireless, you'll probably hear a difference in recording, but I doubt you will really notice the difference that much (if at all) in a live band setting.

The other negative is that my Minnie didn't come with a power cord, manual (ok, not needed!), a sticker, a thank you note, cookie crumbs.... Nothing but Minnie and shipping peanuts (which I hate :spit:).

Right after I posted this, Dave from Club Bass contacted me to tell me that James missed power cords on a couple of Minnies and he would ship me one right away. I have literally dozens, so I declined, but great customer service as usual.

I did a loud rehearsal tonight and Minnie sounds great. Not glaringly better than my Crest ProLite 2.0 but to my ears (maybe in my head?) it offered a bit more clarity... Particularly in the high mids. Again, maybe I wanted it to sound better as Minnie is 2-3x more expensive than the Crest. In any case, the weight, look and size are big pluses for me.

Great product in any case.....

Sweetness I have a party band gig and prefer wireless so I can move around freely but most of my other gigs are corded. I'm also looking at a g50 or 55 to replace my old shure ut

Very interested with your result.

I have not met Dave face to face, but have worked with him for our customers now for about a year. Many conversations. He genuinely cares about the same people I care about. I would like to visit, but I've heard it gets cold in Toronto. ;)

Apparently it gets cold in California too ;)

Dave is a great guy to deal with. Some of the best service in the industry. I've bought quite a lot of gear from Club Bass and have always been happy.

Here are results of a quick-and-dirty DI test comparing Monique's DI with REDDI. I played a short syncopated arpeggio through the cycle from bottom to top of the neck of a Rob Allen Solid 4 (similar to an early 50's-style P bass) strung with ground wounds, tone knob on full. All Monique knobs were set to the noon position to make its DI signal as neutral as possible (i.e. equivalent to REDDI's "pre-EQ" setting).

For best results, load the files into your DAW, which makes it simple to jump back and forth between the tracks to compare tone.

Details:
  • Recorder is a Zoom H6 solid state
  • Raw files packaged with Presonus Studio One, NO EFFECTS applied other than a -1dB limiter to the master output bus (as mentioned, the standard wireless setting slightly overdrove the 2 Monique tracks, but not the REDDI)
  • Monique rack mount has Demeter 800D power section
  • "Cabled" means the bass was connected to the gear with high quality cables
  • "Wireless" used a Line 6 G55
  • "Wireless cable sim" used the G55 "Cable Tone" effect
  • "Split DI" means I used an XLR female to dual-XLR male connector out of Monique's DI
  • All DI connections used identical 25' XLR cables to the Zoom H6

Caveat: in the cabled tests, a Sonic Research Turbo Tuner ST-200 was in the chain. It was excluded during wireless tests. Sorry about that. The device has "true bypass" so don't make a big deal out of this one.

My impressions are that both of these DIs are superb. I wouldn't hesitate to use either in a critical recording situation. The recording quality with wireless is also very good, better than I though it would be. The non-sim wireless signal was hot compared to the cable sim setting; I left the Zoom H6's input volume the same as the wired settings so you can see how much hotter in a DAW. I liked the wireless cable simulator better than the non-sim setting. I also couldn't tell the difference in recording quality between plugging a single XLR into Monique's DI versus using the dual XLR splitter. The results are here so you can decide for yourself whether Monique or REDDI "won" the test. I like 'em both!

I think it's unfair to test Monique "flat" against other di's, since you actually pay more for it to have the EQ and Sensitivity knobs on there to play with. Otherwise wouldn't we all just have a REDDI or some other Tube DI? Nothing against your testing but it seems like Monique gets tested like this a lot and it's hard to say that the eq or sensitivity has a major/minor impact on the tone via such.

Set flat I'd almost say go with the REDDI since it's 2/3rd's - half the price of Monique.

With REDDI, you're stuck with the tone, with Monique you can craft your tone to suit.

I set Monique "flat" because I wanted to be able to make the direct comparison of tone an "apples vs. apples" thing between these two devices.

While one may see ability to craft Monique's tone as a benefit, there are instances where its EQ might be set to extreme points to meet the needs of the backline in a tough live situation, while you might want to be pulling a perfectly neutral tone off the same performance for a recording. I was in exactly that situation a few weeks ago. The room sucked, but the results of EQing for that situation was NOT what I wanted for the direct recording. That's not to say Monique would do a disservice in that situation because recorded tone was "ok," but the pre-EQ capability of REDDI would make it more flexible for post production with a DAW.

Then again, REDDI can't help you if you want the tube tone thing in your personal bass cabinet. As always, tradeoffs never cease.

I've always liked the RED DI. I had the luxury of sitting in the studio of Tony Sheppard with Reggie Hamilton playing through a RED DI. I was stunned. This was before Monique and certainly inspired me. It is a great piece of gear.
